Antiquing in Upstate New York

Shopping Guide for Antique Collectors

Steve Thompson
Many people enjoy antiquing while on vacation, regardless of the limits they might have on bringing things home. Upstate New York is rife with antiquing possibilities, from the Central Leatherstocking region to the Catskills, and although many of the antique shops in this area are autonomous holes-in-the-wall, there are also several antique malls and shopping centers dedicated for specifically this purpose.

Daniel Antiques, for example, is located in Andes in upstate New York, and was first established in 1975. They specialize in antique oriental rugs, hook rugs, quilts and primitive paintings. Although this particular store doesn't look like much from the outside - a small wooden shack off Route 30 with peeling paint and Victorian-style windows - you're bound to find at least a few gems. They also sell some of their stock on eBay, if you don't have a chance to make it upstate.

Venturing on down the road to Roxbury in upstate New York, you'll find Rick's Barn, which resembles a homey country cabin with its exposed wood beams and plain dirt drive. The interior is almost as quaintly rustic as the exterior, with rows upon rows of fantastic antiques that date back as far as 200 years. Chairs, benches, hutches, cabinets, baskets and farm tables are all for sale here, and Rick's specializes in some of the most beautiful wooden antiques in the world.

The Depot Gallery in Bouckville, New York is similarly rich for those who love to go antiquing. Here, you'll find more in the vein of glass, ceramic, porcelain and china, offering plenty of beautiful things with which to accent your home. Antique plates, spoons, sugar bowls, pitchers, vases and other decorative items are sold at fairly reasonable prices.
