Anything You Want

A Sweet and Folksie Piece? Maybe Not

Gretchen Lee Bourquin
Dream the dream, you tell them
the suckling wide eyes
and eager ears
that cross your path

Feed them half-truths
dissolved in blatant lies
wrap spikes
and barbed wire around
your perimeter
and do not let them free

You hold rallies

Barracudas drinking tea,
twisting Leviticus
feeding on ignorance
like Turkish Delight

Meanwhile, the children cry

Where do we go?
Who do we be?

Anything you want,
but just like me

You revel in small voices
that echo your own
feed the rebels,
the Inconsistants
to the wolves
until the mirrors all reflect
your likeness

And meanwhile, the children cry

Where do we go?
Who do we be?

Anything you want,
but just like me

Am I contentious?

Perhaps

but I do not name names
only brand your own black souls
on withered hides
until it strips away
and exposes you

and like Medusa, you see at last
your own tainted image

and the light that bounces
off the mirror,
scorches you

Reflections explode
and it rains shards of
glass truth

And the rebels rise

All colors of truth
expose you
Blanket your darkness
until you become

Shadow

A whisper
of what you once were
