Anytime Fitness Health Club: Review from a Personal Experience

jobythebay
There are Anytime Fitness Health Clubs all over the country. I had never heard of them until they came to Massachusetts. As I was traveling this summer I saw many Anytime Fitness Clubs. I decided to give it a try after getting a free pass for three day. The location I used is at 138 Industrial Park Road, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Facilities are going to vary. In fact the manager who took me on a tour the first day said that this location was more state-of-the-art than others. I'll get to that later.

Anytime Fitness is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. However they are staffed from 8:00a.m. to 9:00p.m. from Monday through Friday and 9:00a.m. to 1:00a.m. on Saturdays.

The way the gym works is that you'll get a card with a security pin number which will enable entry into the building when there is no staff. There are security cameras everywhere. When I commented on not thinking the area was a high crime area the manager said that it was necessary for insurance reasons. When I thought about it later I realized that this is a desolate area during non-business hours and I wouldn't want to work out here at 2:00a.m. no matter how many cameras there are or how fast the police can get there.

1. The weight training equipment: I always worked out around 9:00a.m. The first day I came to tour I went early afternoon knowing that was the quietest times for gyms. There was only one other person there and the owner who was training him.

There wasn't a huge amount of equipment. This was not a large gym nor was it handicapped accessible since there were stairs going from the main floor to the gym floor.

The weight training equipment was in pristine condition and 100% of the items were made by Nautilus. There was an area of machine in which I did circuit training and an area of free weights, benches and barbells. There were two sets of dumbbells going up to 90 pounds.

What I found very nice and something I had never seen was their setting system. As a new member (potential) I was taken around the machines and my settings were put into the computer. So for example on the pec dec machine (for your chest) the seat was on number 3 and the arms were on number 6. This was done for each machine. When I came into the gym I went over to this computer and scanned my card. On each piece of equipment was a console. I entered my code and my settings were there. This is really a nice perk though writing your settings down isn't all that difficult to do. In other words I wouldn't pay for this feature.

2. The cardiovascular equipment: Since Anytime Fitness in Plymouth is small there were just a handful of treadmills, one step mill, a few bikes and a Tread Climber. It was certainly adequate for my needs. I never had to wait since it was never crowded.

3. Other amenities:

There is a day care room which was nicely decorated. You'll pay $3.00 an hour.

There was a cooler with drinks. Since this is geared perhaps to non-staffed times this took money which is something I rarely take into a gym with me.

There was a massage room which is run by an independent person and not Anytime Fitness.

There was a tanning bed.

There were no locker rooms. There were a couple of bathrooms and some lockers outside of them. The reason again is security. They can't put cameras in a locker room so there isn't one. The rest room is for one person so you can lock yourself in not needing a security camera.

4. Other rooms:

There are no classes offered. What they had was a large room with stability balls and mats. What the manager meant by state-of-the art was the large screen television which gave me a choice of a variety of workouts. For example one day I did Tae-Bo. In my opinion this doesn't even come close to replacing an instructor. If I had the discipline to Tae-Bo there I could buy a DVD at home and work out at home eliminating the gym fee.

There was a spinning room with five spin bikes. However there was no instructor. You will be spinning on your own. This was silly in my opinion. The nature of spinning is to have an instructor!

5. The price:

There was a special with no initiation fee. The manager told me that it was for one week but the following week there would be another special. Normally the enrollment fee is $149 and $39 a month for dues. The price goes down for a couple and down a bit more for a family or student. I think that's a lot given this is really just a room with machines.

My final thoughts:

This location was very pretty and spotlessly clean. The manager and owner seemed nice but I wouldn't work out at Anytime Fitness. If all you need is equipment you can join Planet Fitness for $10 a month! (Perhaps a current promotion.)

Equipment is what you make of it. I am young and athletic. If you are committed to reaching your goals, it does not matter what kind of equipment there is. A workout is what you make of it! It drives me crazy that people need to think about quitting when they are only joining for a year! Would you rather pay for a gym, or being ill in the hospital?? This is crazy to me!! Who cares if the management team isn't the best! Go in the gym and complete your workout! Our society is so lazy, no wonder why our health risks are increasing!!! We are all more worried about the management staff being friendly rather than our personal lifestyles changing. I workout at an Anytime Fitness and I am there for myself, not to complain about others. I understand that if I move away, there is an Anytime everywhere so I can use a different one with the same keycard! Great perk for me!

For sure there are more negative comments than positive ones!

This is one of the worst locations... It's mostly the management team. You call them and you get a message saying they are not available and to leave a message. THEY NEVER RETURN YOUR CALL - - until you call corporate and put in a request to have the franchise owner call you. He calls you to deny that they've received any phone calls or emails from you. What a joke! The same owner owns the one in Clinton and you get the same message there too.

WORST gym ever! I can go anywhere for machines, what I needed was a responsive management team who would take care of their members' needs. DON'T DO IT!!!!! Join a gym with a great staff that's there to help you and respond to your requests.

After shopping in a business adjacent to the Apopka Florida Anytime Fitness, I was waiting for my husband to pick me up. A female employee from came out of the Anytime Fitness Gym and told me I was lotiering and to leave the premisis. I don't like I'm homeless or a criminal. I was just waiting 10 to 15 minutes for a ride. The employee must have other issues going on in her life and I happened to be in the way.

Look--if you decide to join this club, realize that you WILL pay for the ENTIRE year, regardless of anything. They say that if you move to a location 45 miles (or more) from an Anytime Fitness location, they will allow you to terminate early, but it's BOGUS. Their "proof of relocation' is rediculous. They want a new drivers license, utility bills, reason, etc. I moved to Asia a few months ago and before I left sent them a certified copy of a 2 year job contract. I won't be driving here, and foreigners with drivers licenses are very rare anyway. I live in a condo that takes care of my utilities. So, in other words, there's no way I can provide them with these pieces of evidence. I have explained this situation in depth to their customer service department and they simply say "you signed the contract". So buyer beware--you're paying for a year, whether you use 3 months or 12.

I was please with this gym until it was time to cancel my membership. When I had originally signed up for the membership the girl told me that the electronic key fees were "deposits" and that when I left the gym she would refund me the $80 for the keys. When I canceled she then said they were only "key fees" and that money was not refundable. Also when I signed up she said there was no cancellation fee if I moved 15+ miles away, but I didn't realize that I should have read the entire fine print of the contract because there is a $50 cancellation fee. I wouldn't have been so angry if she had just be truthful about the terms of the membership in our conversation. And I probably would have signed up anyways, but the fact that she had to lie to my face about the details and say "well basically the contract says this..." This is a lesson learned that I should read the fine print rather than listen to a greedy sales person. Next time I will sign up for lifetime or the YMCA.

By the way, anyone that complains about a gym's cancellation policy needs to ask themselves a couple of questions. 1) Are you moving within the year? 2) If I'm not moving, why can't I commit to a health club for a year? 3) What is more important, HDTV, eating out all the time, going out to the movies, or my health? We're so lazy as a society that it's not even funny...
