Apartment Flooding

A True Story of Flooding

Kurt Evans
When I woke up in the morning, the dangers of flooding were the furthest thing from my mind. I groggily got out of bed, walked out to the living room and I looked out the sliding glass door to check the weather. I saw that it was raining a torrential down pour outside.

The Water

It was raining so much that the water was starting to come in from underneath the sliding glass door. I got a towel and put it on the floor to seep up the water that had come in. I was still tired; so, I went back to bed with no thought of floodng.

The Flooding Water

My mom woke up three hours later to discover that the entire apartment had six inches of water in it. Neither one of us was a happy camper. Anything that was left on the floor was destroyed due to the flooding water.

Life Changing Experience

The next few hours were a life changing experience.

Excess Water

The apartment that we lived in was built down the hill from a big housing development. All of the excess water from the rain, in the housing development, rolled down the hill and into the bottom floor apartments. One of which, we happened to live in.

The Fire Department And The Red Cross

On that day, we had to deal with the fire department and the red cross. The red cross wound up putting us up in a hotel for two days because we couldn't stay in the apartment, because of the water. After the two days, we had to return to the apartment.

Flood And Fire Fans

When we returned to the apartment, there were these huge Flood And Fire fans running 24 hours a day to help dry out the carpet. The landlord wasn't going to replace any of the carpet because they were too cheap to do so. They also wouldn't pay for us to stay in a motel. They said that the fans had to be kept on 24 hours a day; so that the carpet would dry out. So, we had to grin and bare it because we didn't have the money to move.

Forced To Live In Hell

We were stuck there with the loud fans going 24 hours a day, the carpet was still wet, and we were miserable. It was like being forced to live in hell. We didn't have renters insurance because we weren't able to afford it and we didn't think we'd need it.

The Moral Of Apartment Flooding

The moral of this story of apartment flooding is renters insurance is always a good idea. And, if you have a good landlord who actually fixes and replaces things that need to be fixed or replaced, that's one thing to be grateful for.

Bless your heart! I understand, having recently had a water heater in the attic malfunction catastrophically. For days I felt I was living on Apollo 13, just waiting for something else to go wrong! I now have a tankless water heater and a little peace of mind.

I'm just glad nobody was electrocuted. That much water on the floor can be very dangeous especially if there are a lot of devices plugged in, as is the case in most people's homes today.

Wow! Halfway through the lease, our landlords decided the everyone has to have renters insurance, which is a good idea, but I really can't afford another thing to pay for right now.....

What a nightmarish experience. Good advice to renters to carry insurance.
