I saw an old man
Who could barely walk
And I did nothing;
Just passed him on by.
A child cried in fear
Because she was lost.
I just stared at her
As though she wasn't there.
A bum asked for food
But I did not hear.
I ignored his pleas.
He wasn't mine to feed.
A small boy shivered
In the cold of night
For he had no coat,
But I did not care.
I watched a woman
As she was beaten.
I saw no offense;
Still I did nothing.
I am apathy.
I invade the mind
And I make you blind.
The cost is your soul.

Oh my gosh...this is truly a moving poem. It touched me very deeply. You are a very sensitive poet and educator. I once learned in a shared discussion with others, that the most earnest way of teaching is through the arts. I venture to say that you have taught me loads with your sharing of your poem "Apathy." It was from the heart and I now have a more realistic picture of your Spirit of Teaching, than I got from your writings on the "Native American myths." Thank you, thank you, for your connectedness to the Universal Conscience.
Not caring . . . . is indeed costly!
