Apolo Anton Ohno Becomes the Top Medal Winner in History with a Yawn

Athletes do all kinds of weird things to help them get an edge over other competitors. Some have some really wacky superstitions too. Apolo Anton Ohno doesn't have any weird superstitions that are well known at the moment, but something strange happened moments before the biggest race of his career. I'm sure the adrenaline was pumping and the nerves were tense before the big race. The butterflies must have been making a presence, but Apolo didn't show too much of that except a BIG YAWN before skating for his bronze medal.

People were surprised to see his laid back approach just before possibly becoming the Winter Olympian with the most medals ever won. Fans wondered, what was he thinking? Could he be over tired? Might he be bored with the competition? What ever the reason, it didn't look like he was a real threat to win a medal by letting out a huge yawn before the race.

Someone close to Ohno revealed that by yawning, it lets extra oxygen in your lungs before you jet across the ice. That could be the deciding factor between a quarter of a second and making the podium or not. Anything that gives you a little extra energy and adds some confidence is worth it. Your dealing with the best of the best at this sport and it doesn't matter how you get to the podium as long as you get there legally. If you know your body well enough to realize tiny little adjustments before an important race make a positive difference in the outcome, then why not use the adjustments?

Apolo Anton Ohno did win the bronze making him the top medal winner in the history of the Winter Olympics. All of his disciplined training and quick reflexes has kept the medals rolling in for him. He is going to be one of the most famous Olympians ever. Hopefully, Apolo will continue to be a positive role model for children and the sport of skating.
