The 4th of July is Independence Day in the United States, but it's also the biggest picnic day of the year for most patriotic American families. Families and friends gather after parades and before fireworks to celebrate this national holiday with fun foods and festive fare.

What's on the menu for your 4th of July picnic? Perhaps you enjoy barbecued ribs, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, fried chicken or another fine feast. Whatever the entree, you can bet you will also see at least one big bowl of potato salad.

Hot or cold, German or American, potato salad is a perennial favorite for 4th of July picnics.
