Apple iPad: Potential iFlop?

Dominique Williams
Apple fanboys across the world anxiously awaited the announcement of the new Apple product making lots of headlines in recent technology articles and videos around the globe. Apple is known for their quality, but sometimes expensive products that usually change technology and catches the world by storm. Why should this announcement be any different? Apple will announce a product that everyone will crave and possibly skip their car payment for. After the January 20th announcement of the new Apple iPad, did Apple fanboys have a colossal desire to hurry up and purchase this new gadget? Surprisingly, most did not. Why would some supporters of Apple not want to spend their money on this new product that is seen by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, as "phenomenal"? I have compiled a list of what, in my opinion, may cause the iPad to be an iFlop.

The name itself is a turnoff.

I know that this may seem like a silly reason to not buy a product. For some, this is more than enough to say "I pass". As I female, I personally think of feminine hygiene products whenever I hear iPad. There have been numerous jokes to play on the name such as iTampon and iDouche. Unfortunately, I do not believe the jokes will stop any time soon. This is not a good marketing strategy by Apple.

There is no camera.

Imagine being able to have video chat on this thing. Sales would soar. Unfortunately, Apple has left out the simple feature of having a camera on the top front of the iPad. This alone would have probably hooked many business owners who want to have a cyber business meeting with their employees. This would have even been appealing to teenagers who just want to be silly and chat with their friends. So why is there no camera? I wish I knew.

There is no flash support.

Why have a large screen that is not able to support flash content? In other words, websites that are graphically heavy and video sites will not be able to work on the iPad.

There are no multitasking abilities.

Simply put, you cannot do more than one thing at one time. Close one app to open another.

Data plans are only on AT&T.

Sorry Verizon, T-Mobile, or Sprint fans. You have no choice but AT&T if you want 3G support.

It is not cheap.

When has $499 ever been cheap? For the basic model with wifi only, the price is $499. For the 3G model, the price is $629. These prices are only for the 16GB model. If you want the 32GB or 64GB models, you will pay even more. For Apple standards, these prices are unbelievably cheap. For people who do not have money to blow and who are on a tight budget, this is entirely too expensive.

As you can see, the new Apple iPad is definitely not worth all of the hype. The lacking features, price, and uncomfortable name is enough to make many people skip out on this product. There will be people who will go out and buy this new gadget despite the flaws all because it is an Apple product. But for me, it is basically a big iPod Touch with a few enhancements. Personally, I would just go buy an iPod Touch and be happy with that. Do not waste your money.

I am entitled to my opinion and like I stated before, I am sure everyone has their own. I am just basing my opinion off of the features of this product. It is not as if I am making anything up. I feel that this "version" of the Apple iPad lacks innovation. All the things that you can do on this product, you can do on a laptop or the iPod Touch. It needs something for it to stand out and right now, I dont see anything that would make me drop all of that money for it.

I know these are your opinions and the thing that is frightening is the lack of intelligence in tech bloggers, Everyone is saying the same thing but in different ways.
Anyway if the tech bloggers are really intelligent they don't have to nitpick and write for a living, sorry, writing is their passion.

Well, I'm sorry, but your opinion parrots hundreds of other opinion pieces that say nearly the same exact thing. You fail to realize who's the target market for this device, and I will bet anything that you have not actually used this device. I found this opinion piece about as worthless as nearly all the other negative opinion pieces out there.

Thank you for your comments...This was my personal opinion on the product and I am sure everyone has their own. Although I do agree that this is not the final version and I am sure there will be things added to make the product better, but I believe it should have been there already. Why not hit hard on the first try? The iPad will probably do really good anyway but I think there should have been a bit more to set this thing apart and really make people want to buy it. I just do not agree that $600 is cheap by any means. It may replace your xbox and netbook but both of these devices combined cost about $450-$500 for me. So I do not plan on buying. I also have an iPod Touch that does almost the same thing...just without the big screen of course.
Now your mind really does not have to be in the gutter to think that "iPad" sounds funny. iSlate, iTablet, anything would have been better than iPad in my opinion. I wonder if Apple saw that MadTV skit about the iPad lol.

Too bad you decided to follow the nattering nabobs of negativity and not choose to do your own analysis of the product. (But I have to side with you on the iPad thing, but any name would have its detractors.) This isn't the final version of the product, but it's a great start on a brand new computing platform. I see great potential in the iPad once the application gates start to open. $600 for a device that replaces your Xbox and a netbook, that's really pretty cheap.

Whats wrong with he name iPad?

Some people just need to get their minds out of the gutter.

Did only having AT&T hurt the iPhone?

Sales would soar having a camera for video conferencing. Maybe so but just imagine all those people using bandwidth. The wireless networks are having problems right now as it is.

    No Flash becuase Flash sucks?

No multi-tasking? True. But stay tuned. My gut feeling is iPhone/iPad OS 4.0 may have some form of multi-tasking.
