Apple IPhone Product Review: All that and a Bag of Chips (If You Can Afford the Bag of Chips Afterwards!)
Tech-savvy Consumers Get the Biggest Bang for Their Buck with Multi-functional Product
We've already encountered this above scenario with such revolutionary products as the XBox 360, PS3, Wii, and other gaming systems where not only were they in high demand and selling for what can be for some a good month's pay, but there were even violent altercations for the products themselves. While Apple's iPhone didn't quite bring out the nastiness we've seen some display like, say for instance, what some of us remember used to happen during the Christmas "runs" on items (I still remember seeing a woman punch another for a Cabbage Patch Doll), nonetheless the iPhone certainly bedazzled the world of technology like never before: it was like the world rediscovered the whole "your peanut butter is in my chocolate" and vice versa by bringing in the technology of wireless communication and combining it with the iPod functionality and backing it up with some great web prescence.
Steve Jobs, take a bow. Somewhere Bill Gates is NOT happy with his developers.
So, let's talk about it. The look of the iPhone is unquestionably what sets it apart, as its shimmering black body resembles an iPod on steroids. It has an amazingly smooth interface, and the design will not be able to be duplicated for a very long time, in my opinion. I, for one, was a little skeptical about navigating through the endless possibilities, but just like everything else, within minutes you are zooming around everything from texting to music to your calendar to pictures to seeing what is playing at the movies on the web. Believe me, folks, I am not a techno-geek, but I will say I have at least some advanced knowledge, and this is a great product overall for the user who wants to use it--effectively.
Which brings me to my next point. The price tag of the iPhone left some people gasping. At a minimum of 500.00 for the "small" 4GB iPhone, it was something that consumers at first balked at; combined with the fact that it is exclusive to AT&T networks, in order to effectively utilize the call function (let's not forget, that IS what it was designed for originally), that would mean some people would have to either break contracts or continuing to pay their cellular provider while using AT&T. With this idea in mind, along with the extensive functionality the iPhone offers, unless you are going to live, breathe, and basically sleep next to your iPhone (which I am absolutely positive people have done, and I do NOT want to know the details), the price for having this is a bit much now. I know that some people just want to simply have the "next" big thing regardless, but if you don't really have the money to spend on it, don't have the tech-savvy skills to really exploit all of the Youtube videos, download a ton of songs, IM constantly, etc., etc., my suggestion would be to wait until the price falls a bit, or at least when it becomes available on more than just one network.
A side note: even for those that are potentially switching to AT&T, it should be noted that in studies, the network that provides the wireless web and everything else is actually slow to begin with; I understand having the capability to do this in itself is wonderful because you have a huge screen to view the web on, the ability to zoom, and many other things, those who demand superior performance will be let down.
Bottom line: This is a wonderful item, and it does not dissapoint with everything it can do. In fact, I've already tried to see if there's a hidden space to put my bread in it to toast.....Seriously, though, it is great--there's no denying that. However, for all of the other potential cons for this, if you can wait, then sit tight.
