If you've never heard of scrapple, it is the leftovers from butchering a hog, grinding everything up, mixing it with corn meal and pressing into a loaf shaped pan until firm. It is then sliced, fried and served for breakfast as an alternative to sausage or bacon.
Scrapple is a big deal in Delaware, Maryland and with the Amish, and the largest scrapple producer is located, where else, but Bridgeville, Delaware.
The T.S.Smith Farm has been growing apples since 1907, and the 800 area farm, one of two remaining apple farms in the state is located just outside the town of Bridgeville.
Combine the love of scrapple with apples and Delawareans have The Annual Apple Scrapple Festival. This will be the 18th year for the festival that is expected to attract more than 25,000 visitors to this small Sussex County town. The festival will take place October 9 and 10, but the Little Miss and Miss Apple Scrapple Contest will be held October 8 at Woodbridge High School. Admission is $2.00.
On Oct. 9, the festival kicks off with a carnival, food vendors and a street dance from 4 p.m. The next morning join the Men of the Union United Methodist Church for an all-you-can-eat scrapple breakfast from 7 till 11 at the Church's Fellowship Hall.
The festivities begin at 9 a.m. with more than 250 crafters in three locations around town; carnival rides, children's games, a car show, sponsored by the Southern Delaware Street Rod Association, a Pig Out ( ride in bike show) with a tattoo contest, a model train display at the fire hall, a 5K Hog Jog, a shot put style Scrapple Chunkin Contest (They love to Chunk things in lower Delaware check out my Associated Content article on Pumpkin Chunkin) and a Mayoral Scrapple Tossing Contest.
If that isn't enough check out the scrapple carving contest, the tractor pull, trade show,
entertainment, music, and food, food, food, with scrapple booths all over town and apple goodies including apple fritters. The day concludes with another street dance from 7 until 10 p.m.
This is one of Delaware's top fall festivals and has something for everyone. It's a great way to spend a fall Saturday.
