Everyone knows that apple sauce is a delicious dish, served either by itself or as part of a larger meal. If you are one of those who likes to make your own food, then you should consider making your own applesauce. If you decide to do so, however, you should educate yourself about the various varieties of apple that make the best apple sauce. This article, the first in a series, will describe some of those varieties.

Gala

This delightful little apple was developed in New Zealand, and has since become one of the most popular apple varieties. It has a very singular appearance, with red and yellow stripes and a heart shape. It also has a very sweet flavor, so they will be a pleasure to cook with. They are generally harvested from the early to the middle part of the season, so be sure to pick some of these when you go on your apple-picking trip.

Honeycrisp

The Honeycrisp apple was developed in the state of Minnesota, and is very sweet with a lovely scent as well. In addition to the juiciness (they are great for making apple juice) the Honeycrsip is also ideal for making applesauce. They are usually harvested during the middle of the season.

Jonathan

The Jonathan variety of apple is usually one of the first to ripen during the Fall, so you will want to make sure to get them before your local orchard is picked clean. The taste of this apple is somewhere between sweet and tart, making them a perfect apple for making a delicious apple sauce. This apple is usually harvested during the early part of the season.

Golden Delicious

The Golden Delicious originated in the state of West Virginia from a chance seedling and became immensely popular once it came into the ownership of the Stark Brothers Company. Since then, it has retained its popularity. It has a white flesh that usually retains its shape and often stays white longer than usual after it is cut, and a milder flavor that is very delicious once cooked. It is usually harvested early in the season, so be sure to visit your local apple orchard early to make sure you get some of these delicious apples.
