My boyfriend and I don't drink alcohol, but I had heard him talk about how good the virgin mudslides were at Applebee's. During a recent trip to the restaurant, I decided to see what made these drinks such a favorite for my boyfriend. I have to admit that I expected a chocolate milkshake, because after you take out the Kahlua, you've taken away the coffee flavor. But, I'm pleased to say that I was wrong.
When the drink arrived, I have to say that I was immediately impressed with the presentation. Applebee's Virgin Mudslide is served in a frosted glass that has swirls of chocolate sauce around the inside of the glass. It is also topped off with whipped cream and additional chocolate sauce. It looked absolutely amazing, but we all know that looks can be deceiving.
I'm happy to say this was not one of those cases. This drink tastes as good as it looked, if not better. The taste of coffee was apparent, which blended nicely with the creamy vanilla flavor of the ice cream and the decadent chocolate flavor of the sauce. This was one good shake. I could see how these would be dangerous if you were drinking the regular version. Something that goes down that smooth could really get you in trouble.
While I wasn't able to track down the nutritional values for the virgin style mudslide, I did find the information for Applebee's regular version. A 20 ounce regular mudslide contains 755 calories, 32 grams of fat, 20 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams of trans-fat, 1 gram of polyunsaturated fat, 9 grams of monounsaturated fat, 125mg of cholesterol, 240mg of sodium, 590mg of potassium, 87 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, 80 grams of sugar and 10 grams of protein. Obviously, the amounts would be lower for a virgin style drink.
I would have to give Applebee's Virgin Mudslide 5 out 5 stars. This drink was incredibly delicious and had the perfect amount of coffee added to the mix. I would order this drink again and again and highly recommend it to anyone that loves the combination of coffee and chocolate.
