The newest model Touch 4G adds many features from the iPhone 4, including FaceTime, high definition (HD) video recording, retina display, the Apple A4 processor, and a built-in three-axis gyroscope.
For its FaceTime feature, the iPod Touch 4G includes two built-in cameras, with the one on the back shooting HD 720p video.
Rear Camera Concerns
Just how good is that rear camera? It turns out that it's only about .7 megapixels. That's less than one megapixel.
So, what's the deal with that?
"The camera was one of the 2 main things people asked for," reviewed J. Justin at Amazon.
"The other being the Retina display. My assumption is that Apple didn't want to affect iPhone sales and purposely dummied down the camera. Shame on them. They want us to pay $240 to $400 for an iPod with a terrible camera."
The Specs
The iPod Touch 4G is said to be the iPhone without the phone, but the bottom line here is that the Touch's camera is nowhere near as good as the iPhone's.
Here's the tech specs from Apple:
"Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still photos (960 × 720) with back camera."
Why Less Than 1MP?
As for why the iPod Touch 4G's rear camera ended up being not so great? It may have to do with the size of the device.
"The iPod Touch is about one millimeter thinner than the iPhone 4 (which is significant when it comes to pocketability)," said Brian X. Chen at Wired. "Anything bigger than a one-megapixel sensor probably would have been a squeeze, especially when you consider that the Touch includes a front-facing camera, too."
The reality is, with this model of the iPod Touch being so thin, there is just barely enough room to fit a camera in it.
Reaction
Still, some users are left scratching their heads as to why Apple would put only a .7MP camera into the iPod Touch 4G.
"Who on the face of this planet today will put a camera in a device and make it just 0.7 MP?" wrote one user.
"It is inconceivable. This is Apple contempt for you. It is a killer for me, and I was ready to order one. What will you do?"
What do you think about the new iPod Touch 4G? With only .7 megapixels, is that a deal breaker for you or are you still going to get?

Post a CommentHi Caleb, This is really a 0.7 MP. Download Battery Doctor app from itunes.
Tap on More button(on screen) Tap on System.
Here you can see the Apple's dirty secret. I bought one and really disappointed after knowing the secret. Try take the pictures in Medium light. They came blur. I am a photography hobbyist....
Apple shame on you!!!
You guys r stupid. The iPod touch 4g has a 7 megapixel camera not .7. I actually own one of these iPods and i take lots of photos with it and post them on flicker. After i post, it looks as if was taken with a 12 or even higher megapixel camera. I also post vid on YouTube with this camera and i get TRUE HD. not some horrible quality vid.
people if you were going to buy the ipod for the camra. GAL get a life. you can buy a better camra somwhere diffrent. but the ipod is a handy tool
Deal breaker, would have purchased 2 already if it weren't for the awful camera. Shame on you Apple!
i got my new ipod and the camera is better then i expected considering it is 0.7mp, but still apple should not have hid the truth.
this article is absolute BS its making people think the camera is bad if they actuslly gon to the apple store and use it maybe theyll change their ind because the quality looks amazing!!

Definitely a deal breaker for me. I was ready to place the order but decided not to once I saw how low res the camera was. Shame on you Apple for pulling this. My dollars will be spent elsewhere.
Folks have been waiting at least two years for a still camera on an iPod Touch and this is what Apple delivers? What a colossal blunder. Fair or not, this camera will inevitably be compared to the current iPhone camera. What a flop.
Deal-breaker for me. I liked the idea of having a PDA+media player with no $30/mo data plan but was holding out for a decent camera. The Touch would have been my first Apple product--as it is, it's pushed me that much closer to an Android. Serious fail, Apple.
