Apple's Pentalobe Screwdriver and Screws

KS
The Pentalobe Screwdriver is the new security measure being taken by Apple. They are using a new type of screw for the iPhone 4. "Penta Lobe" screws are hard to find a proper screwdriver for and thus prevent users from tampering or fixing their own product.

This new screw is a five point screw similar in design to the Torx, but with more rounded edges. There is not a single reputable supplier for the proper screwdriver needed for these "pentalobular" screws. However there is a driver that works on the iPhone 4 case. Keep in mind it is not an actual pentalobe screwdriver, so it is not a perfect fit in the screws. This driver has more star shaped edges than flowery, and so it is not recommended for frequent use. It is intended to remove the pentalobe screws and replace them with Phillips so that getting back into your phone will become less difficult.

Keep in mind that the iPhone is not the only device using these type of screws. They can also be found in the 2009 MacBook Pro, 2010 MacBook Air, as well as the Apple iPhone 4. Apple has also used three different sizes of the screw heads so far, making it very difficult for you to do any of your work on these devices. Also if you take your Apple products into Apple technicians you are likely to find that they replace your old screws with these new pentalobe screws.

These measures have been taken by Apple in attempts to keep users from tampering with the insides of their own products. Many customers are displeased with the thought that this makes their products not really their own.

Currently there is a $10 screwdriver being sold that claims to be effective on these screws. Were Apple's attempts all in vain?
