Apples are in Season: Here are Tasty Ideas

Fall is the perfect time to take the family out to an orchard and grab some apples! This fruit is in abundance all over the country as the growing season ends. If you have tons of apples and are at a loss of what to do with them, stick around I'll share some ideas.

One of my favorite things to do is to take apples, and peel them and slice them small. Toss them in a pan of water and allow them to boil until they are soft. Now strain he water from them and put those into a blender. Blend them on high and create your own applesauce. You can add sugar and cinnamon to suit your taste or forgo it all together.

If you blend it very fine, and leave out the sugar, you can feed it to infants and its much cheaper then what you would find on the shelf at your local grocery store.

Store it in the refrigerator or can this to enjoy all winter long.

Pies are great, just slice up the fruit, and layer it on top of a piecrust. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Bake it until the apples are soft and the crust is brown. One way to enjoy that warm apple pie is to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or cool whip, but here in northeast Pennsylvania we enjoy our fresh hot apple pie with a nice thick slice of New York State sharp cheddar cheese.

Baked apples with or without a crust are perfect for using up this fruit. The crust typically is piecrust, and if you purchase some pre-made crust at the store these are a snap. Put the fruit in the middle and wrap the crust up over and bake until the apple is soft. If you do not feel like waiting for them to bake, peel and core one. Once that is done place it in a microwave safe dish sprinkle on the sugar and cinnamon and nuke it for a few minutes until the apple is soft. Allow it to sit in the microwave for a bit, as it will be extremely hot.
