Living in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, I have had the opportunity to frequent many of the local restaurants but the one I find myself recommending to new visitors most often is The Applewood Farmhouse restaurant.

One of the many reasons I love this restaurant, other then their great food which I will go into more detail in a few, I just wanted to set the mood first. Is the atmosphere. The atmosphere is like a breath of fresh air! Imagine sitting in a homey six room house which is the center piece of the restaurant since 1921 where you can still see the glorious built in oak furniture in the original living and dining room. It boasts cozy country charm with the feel and smell of grandma's house. Outside is equally pleasing with it's large wrap around porch grazed with wooden rockers for customers to relax and enjoy after a hearty meal. Not to mention being surrounded by beautiful acres of delicious apple trees!

The service and hospitality are second to none. Served up in a home style manner, with a staff that gives the meaning to the words Southern Hospitality. Their friendly smiles are contagious and their mannerisms are delightful. You may walk in feeling like a stranger but you will leave feeling like a friend!

Talk about great food! Oh my, just thinking about it gets my mouth watering! This is not your typical restaurant, the menu consists of unique southern fix'ins that you will not find anywhere else. Each meal starts out with a refreshing apple julep and applewoods apple fritters with homemade apple butter. They are so scrumptious and of course my favorites and you can buy extras by the sack full to take home too (yep! guilty as charged).

Then onto the main course of your choice, my favorite being their old fashioned chicken and dumplings (tender chicken slowly cooked in a homemade sauce and served with freshly cooked dumplings) are you salivating yet? Maybe try the fresh baked meatloaf, that's just like Grandma's. How about digging into the applewood pork loin, tender boneless pork loin smoked over apple wood and served with homemade apple relish. As delicious as these are, their entire menu is equally delectable with so many choices, whether it's barbecue ribs or thick broiled steak, melt in your mouth buttermilk pancakes , homemade taters and fresh baked biscuits with savory southern style gravy, there is something sure to tantalize even the most finicky taste buds!

What could a good old down home southern meal like this cost? Actually the prices are quite modest ranging from $6.00 to around $15.00. The portions are quite large and will satisfy the hungriest of appetites. Can't finish it all, they are ready to wrap it up so you can take it home!

Not being a native of Tennessee and only living in the area nearing 4 years. I can give you my review from a visitors stand point as well as being a connoisseur of great food (I do love to eat!) So in my opinion the Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant near the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee represents to me what the South is supposed to be all about.

Kind folks, family and friends, southern mannerisms and the best darn down home cooking around!

If you are new to the area or are planning to vacation nearby be sure to pay a visit to Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant also referred to as the Apple Barn by the locals. They are located at 240 Apple Valley Rd. just off of hwy 441 in Sevierville Tennessee 37862
