Applying for Federal Pell Grants in Summer

Alicia Bodine
It is important to note that a federal Pell Grant can be used for only one school at a time. You cannot attend a day college and a night college and expect to use the grant at both. To apply for a federal Pell Grant, you must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Step 1:

Submit your FAFSA June 30. The school year runs from July to the following June. So if you plan on taking summer classes, you will need to file your FAFSA before June 30th.

Step 2:

Go to the FAFSA website (see resources) and begin to fill in your information.

Step 3:

Fill out your personal information first. This is the easiest part and shouldn't take you more than five to ten minutes.

Step 4:

Read and answer the questions in section two. This will show you what your dependency status is. That means whether you will need your parent's information or not.

Step 5:

Go get your parents and have them fill out section three which is all about their information and income. If your parents are good at organization, it won't take them long to fill out.

Step 6:

Get out your latest taxes for section four. It is all about your personal finances. This section is short and if you have your taxes handy, you will have it filled out in no time.

Step 7:

Finish up by filling out the last section which is all about which colleges you plan on attending. You can put in more than one if you are undecided, but only one school will get the grant money in the end.

Step 8:

Submit the form by the deadline. You can do this easily from the website.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also check on the status of your application any time you want. They will issue you a pin number for your protection.
  • The deadline is midnight on June 30th no matter what year you apply. Don't apply late or you may miss out on your funding.
