For companies, small or large, sales is an integral part in its life since it is where they receive basic and initial profits. However, when we speak about long term profits, companies usually give equal attention to after sales support. Of course, after selling a product or service, you can't just leave your customers after making the sale. You need to support them in regards to any question, problems, comments and suggestions and it is important since it will show you their overall experience and how your customers feel about your products and services.

It often decides whether a customer will stay with your company or leave you for a competing product. One of the best ways to connect to your customers is through your customer service team and one of the most common forms of customer service is through phone. The job is simple yet very significant.

Applying for a job as a phone customer service representative can be very straightforward but of course, even though you have the skills needed, you will go through the same process as with everybody else. So how can you make yourself stand out among the applicants for the phone customer service agent position? How can you prove that you are qualified for the position?

The top priority when applying for a phone customer service position is your communication skills. Yes you can speak, yes you can understand but can you converse properly? When you're with a customer on the phone, you interact with him/her. You need to apply the basic concepts of communication. You need to apply active listening so you can respond appropriately. The moment you start the interview, their evaluation on your skills begins immediately on the first question.

Multi-tasking is another essential skill that is needed for this particular job. While on the phone with a customer, you will most likely be looking at your computer and your files for data, searching for something, writing something down, thinking about possible resolution, etc. You'll probably be given some practical tests to see if you are able to multi-task and if you have basic skills such as handling computers.

Another edge that you can take advantage of when applying for a phone customer service position is your knowledge about the products and services of the company. Before your interview, do some research. Learn what the company provides to its customers, what exactly are their products and services, what is its reputation, how did you get to know the company and remember to concentrate on the positive aspects all throughout.

And most importantly, as with any other job application, be yourself. Do not try to be someone you are not or pretend that you know something. Your interviewer would most certainly see through it and it's going to establish a bad first impression. What if you try to know something and they followed up with a tricky question to see if you really know it? You probably won't be able to answer or just keep going around in circles with your responses. Wear proper attire. Don't show up in casual clothing. Wear at least smart-casual clothes or business-casual. Relax and show that you want the position and that you are right for the job. Be confident, not too over confident, and speak naturally.
