Characteristics of a Poodle

The poodle is one of the most intelligent members of the canine family. It is believed to be a fop--his time is largely spent in personal establishments and properties. Though this dog gives very little trouble to his owners, he needs a lot of attention to keep him in perfect cleanliness and in exhibition order.

There is probably no other dog that is as interesting and as responsive as a poodle. There is something so human in his attractiveness, mainly due to his amazing powers of reasoning and mind qualities. An intelligent animal, his learning aptitude is always something to be proud of, and there are many people who can testify to his marvelous talent and astounding versatility.

He has distinguished himself not merely as a showman's dog, but as a trained and adept canine at performing tricks. What is most special about this dog that puts him at the top of his fellow canines is his alertness. He is talented and always capable of learning new tricks.

One of the most attractive things about a poodle is his coat. When a poodle's profuse and long coat is not kept constantly brushed, it twists up into little loops or cords that grow with the new hair. Both becomes entwined, thus creating what we usually see as poodle's hair. If these curls and cords are not cut short, they drag along the ground, preventing the dog from moving with comfort. This becomes a problem to both the dog and the owner especially when performing in dog shoes and exhibitions.

These corded poodles are very showy and attract public attention when exhibited at shows due to the striking appearance of its coat. The coat must be oiled constantly to keep the cords supple, soft and without breakage. Their coats cannot be brushed, so to keep him clean, the owner must wash him, which is always a long and difficult process due to the coat. The coat takes a really long time to dry, which can go for hours. This results in dirty and somewhat smelly coats, which is one of the main reasons why poodles have slowly declined in popularity among fanciers. They are very hard to take care of, and most probably very expensive too.

Taking care of a poodle has its own disadvantages. For one it is quite expensive to maintain the coat, and it would take up all your time. It requires passion, skill, and patience to take good care of a smart and amazing dog-the poodle.
