Flowers. A timeless classic. Gradients of colors of flowers corresponding to the romantic intentions of the giver have long been encouraged. Women love receiving flowers at work, especially as a surprise. Men who receive flowers are usually pleasantly caught off guard.
The flower industry has come a long way in the efficiency and convenience of buying a wonderful selection of flowers. They can be bought online and delivered to anywhere in the country, regardless of your location. You can buy them at most grocery stores, your traditional florists, and even on the side of the road! The great thing about flowers is that one rose says more than an expensive gift.
Food is a major player in the Valentine's Day holiday. There are so many possibilities that you can choose from. Either making favorite desserts and packaging them in decorative tins, or buying exotic sweets from specialty shops will go a long way in displaying your "confections" to the one you adore. Many companies sell specialty food baskets or "food-of-the-month" clubs. That would be something that would last all year long!
Travel is also another option. However, the stage of the relationship is dependent upon the type of travel adventure you will undertake.
For budding relationships, a day trip could be perfect. Traveling to the beach, tourist destination, or taking a novelty trolley or bus ride around the city could be the perfect and appropriate Valentine's Day gift idea for the stage in your relationship. For more established relationships, the sky (or travel budget) is the limit. Day or weekend cruises are the romantic getaway jackpot for any couple. Take a camping trip or visit the next town and spend the weekend in a hotel or bed and breakfast.
Gift certificates or cards work well, although I would recommend combining this gift with something a little more thoughtful. It doesn't have to be huge, but maybe it is the "treasure" to a custom made treasure map or scavenger hunt that the two of you do together.
Creativity and thoughtfulness are synonyms for this holiday.
