Government Issues Immediate Recall for Popular Child's Toy

If your child owns the popular toy Aqua Dots, throw them all away immediately and contact www.aquadotsrecall.com for a refund or exchange. The must-have toy has been voluntarily recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission along with Spin Master, the toy's manufacturer. The government is projecting some 42 million units to be recalled.

Aqua Dots is a craft kit that contains colored beads with a special coating, allowing the beads to stick together when sprayed with water. The water sprayed over the surface of the beads results in the beads sticking and holding the toy permanently in place. Children are able to sculpt various forms with the tiny beads. The coating is where the problem occurs. The coating when swallowed transforms into a chemical that is much like the chemical in a so called date rate drug. The drug can be toxic, resulting in coma, respiratory depression, seizures and possible death.

One twenty month old swallowed several dozen of the colorful beads and became dizzy, vomited and was hospitalized. The child has since recovered and been released.

Aqua Dots are extremely popular with children of all ages and have been rated as one of the top toys for the upcoming Christmas season.
Aqua Dots are also extremely popular in Australia and has been named the #1 toy in the country. In Australia Aqua Dots are known as Bindeez Beads.

The toy is manufactured by Spin Master, located in Toronto, Canada and made in China. Aqua Dots are sold in various kits ranging in price from $17 to $30. They have been manufactured and sold since April 2007 through November 2007.

This toy is just one of the most recent in a list of recalls which consists mostly of products manufactured in China. The toys have been recalled due to various safety reasons. The most prevalent of these causes is for the dangerous levels of lead in paint used on these items. Lead can cause mental retardation and even death. Many popular toy manufacturers are undergoing financial devastation due to these recalls. Popular toy manufacturers for Fisher-Price, Mattel, and Disney Co. have been involved in recent recalls due to safety concerns.

The manufacturer is offering a free replacement toy. Please call Spin Master at 1-800 622-8339 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Eastern Standard time, Monday through Friday or you may contact them on their Web-site at www.aquadotsrecall.com for more information.

I'd heard about this on the local news. They said some mother put some of these in her mouth because they wouldn't stick together. She ended up becoming very ill. Some people... excellent report!

I know I've read this already, but it's interesting to read what others have to say. I check my recall articles frequently to see what people say as well. Odd comments by Mrs. Thies down there. ??

I almost bought this for my daughter with the gift card she won in a costume contest. I'm glad I didn't! I was afraid it was a little too old since she's only five. I just published an article on American made toys. It's scary because you never know if what you buy will be on the news the following week. Great job on this!

Toxic is toxic, but it is very important to get age appropriate toys for children.

    Well done reporting job.

Great reporting. When buying toys for kids I always look for that warning label about age approriate toys. Beads definitely are not for under 2. China (and other countries) do not have regulations for product safety that we have in the USA which is what causes these kind of mishaps. Interesting that the gov is going into debt to China to pay for the war in Iraq; Bill Gates hires Chinese to do tech jobs in the USA feeling their techies are superior to US educated and I will not trust a car made in China!
