Recalling his days as an intern for William Cody, Barry Berkus, A.I.A., spoke to a sold out crowd during a Palm Springs Modernism Week event at The Park Imperial South Development. Berkus designed the 31 unit complex when he was just 25 years old shortly after opening his own design firm.

Marking its 50th anniversary, Park Imperial South was described as experimental for 1961 according to Berkus. The "folded plate" designed roofs were constructed in Oakland, transported to Palm Springs via truck then put into place by crane.

Berkus stated that his goal for Park Imperial South was to create a significant design space for people who could not afford an architect. He saw the project as a spiritual concept and his design intentions were to incorporate the distinctiveness of the surrounding mountains and to make the lines of indoor and outdoor living transparent.

"Park Imperial South marked a pivotal point for me," said Berkus. "It opened up a way of looking at living space that still informs my designs. It inspired a preference of light, flexible room definitions and a fluid connection with the outdoors - seeing home not as a container, but as a backdrop for particular tastes and lifestyles."

Built by The Trudy Richards Company and touted as resort living just a footstep away from a perpetual holiday, Berkus also stated the project was not considered successful at the time of construction. He said that to see it come to life many years later by the resurgence of appreciation for Palm Springs modernist architecture was exciting. "Being acknowledged by those who live within the architect's dream is the highest honor one can aspire to, and the fact that residents here have kept my dene condition is a remarkable compliment," Berkus said. "I'm deeply appreciative of their regard, and for the opportunity to re-visit this design as part of Modernism Week."

Nine of the units in the complex were also opened and available for tour during the occasion. The units were in varying stages of restoration and remodel. Current owners have incorporated more recent design elements into the residences while successfully adhering to the original modernist model. Modernism Week attendees marveled at the rooflines, terrazzo floors, sunken tubs, spacious patio areas as well as original design elements retained by some home owners such as range hoods, intercom systems and jalousie windows.

The Park Imperial South Home Owners Association has been restoring the complex over the last 10 years. Because of the group's efforts, The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation has granted funds to continue restoration projects. Proceeds from Saturday night's event will directly benefit the ongoing rejuvenation & renovation of the complex.
