Are Banks Open on Columbus Day 2010? the Post Office?

What is and Isn't Open on Columbus Day

Tamara McRill
The confusion over the federal holiday have people wondering, "Are banks open on Columbus Day 2010?" What about other federal and state offices? The answer isn't simple. It depends on the state you live in.

Are Banks Open on Columbus Day?

Banks are not open on Columbus Day, except in Nevada. The state doesn't recognize the day as a holiday, but as a day of observance. So federal, state and local offices are open. So be advised that any ATM transactions won't be processed until the next business day.

The stock markets are still open.

In all other states, federal offices are also closed on Columbus Day. This includes the post office. Regular mail will not be delivered today--although express delivery is still running.

Federal courts are also closed today. So those with immigration, bankruptcy and veteran's benefits cases will not be able to file today.

Are State & Local Offices Open on Columbus Day 2010?

This is a harder question to answer and depends on the state and office. Columbus Day is often considered a rolling holiday for state and local employees. While some offices just close, others offer workers the option to work or choose another day off.

For example, the Illinois Department of Unemployment Security is closed. Some courthouses, such as Madison county, are only open for early voting.

If you have the holiday off, and were planning to visit any state or local agencies, your best bet is to call ahead and make sure the office is open. You may have to deposit checks or money orders in payment boxes to pay bills. Money orders can be obtained at local grocery stores or gas stations that sell them. Another option is to handle your business online. Many DMV and unemployment websites will be functioning business as usual.

Other States that Don't Consider Columbus Day a Holiday

In addition to Nevada, there are two other states that won't observe Columbus Day 2010 a holiday. These are Hawaii and South Dakota.

Hawaii observes Discoverer's Day on the second Monday in October. The day is a celebration of the Polynesian discovery of the islands. It is mandated that the observance not be considered a state holiday. So federal, state and local offices are open.

South Dakota celebrates Native American Day as a state holiday. According to the Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center, Native American Day was founded in 1989, at the urging of then-Governor George S. Mickelson. Governor Mickelson signed a resolution designating the second Monday of each October for the holiday.

Hi, This was so helpful. I hate these little holidays! (That's what I call them) They drive me crazy wondering if I will get mail or not or if I can go to the bank. Or if school is open or not b/c I have to watch out for kids crossing the street in midmorning. lol.

    Thanks a lot.

This is all so confusing, so thanks for this one. Why don't we just have nationwide holidays and close all state and federal offices? Is that soooo difficult to do? Sheesh.
