Are Bikes a Considerable Alternative to Cars?

Jerry
I've recently purchased a new bike, as a way to escape these soaring gas prices. Another reason I've recently purchased the bicycle was because the weather here is beginning to warm up and getting really nice, which is excellent bike-riding weather conditions.

I enjoy riding bikes in the morning, the afternoon, even considerably late into the night. Cars, I only drive to get where I'm going and then I avoid driving any more at all costs. While riding a bike, I'll ride around for the pure entertainment because it's great for the body, is fun, and it's great to get outside and get some fresh air every once in a while without spending tons of money for gas and car prices.

So are bikes considered an alternative to cars? To me, they are. However, only to an extent. There are some situations where I definitely would prefer to have a car. If I was hauling anything important, I would definitely prefer a car, as well as a situation where the weather conditions are extremely harsh to be riding a bicycle in.

For me, I'll ride a bike whenever it's possible and necessary. Not even just to avoid using my car, it's a great sense of getting out and about. There are several advantages to riding a bicycle over a car.

Health
People in America are lazy. We all ride in our cars, avoid walking and working at all costs. If you get used to riding a bicycle, you'll be much less dependent on a vehicle and will be in much better physical shape, as well as feel better about yourself!

Money
You can save a ton of money by riding bicycles. Of course you don't have all of the convenience, but you'll pay a very minor amount of money for a nice bike, and no additional prices are really required. Upkeep and maintenance are both extremely easy and cheap.

Reliability
Ever have the problem with your car starting? No brakes? No fluid? Gas? You'll never run into these problems with a bike. Almost all bikes are very easy to use, require nothing, and are always ready to go. Bicycles very rarely break down and are much more reliable in that sense than a vehicle.

Overall, there are definitely advantages and disadvantages to riding a bicycle as a main source of transportation. I wouldn't necessarily recommend using a bicycle only, but whenever you have the chance to, or feel in the mood for it, pedal that bike around, it's free!

I have been biking for 21 years and considerable distances, such as to San Francisco (68 km), Oakland (70 km), and Hollister (100 km), also to Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Gilroy, Pacifica, and Sunol.
