Are Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan Ruining America?

Janine Logue
Do you remember the days when a few racy pictures of Miss America got her stripped of her title and disgraced in the face of the nation? I am sure that Vanessa Williams does! Yet, today, in the age of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, we have a Miss America who is going to rehab.

Of course how can we blame her, she is only imitating those who she, theoretically, idolizes. Lindsay Lohan has been photographed and filmed falling down drunk by the paparazzi, how many times was it, before she even turned 21.

Britney Spears and Paris Hilton are out on the town exposing themselves and dancing all night long. Aren't these the same infractions that our current Miss America is accused of committing?

Some might argue that Miss America should be held to a higher standard, but what about Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan? Should they not be held to the same standard of decency?

I remember when activists and parental groups where spending their time going after the Barbie doll because of the image she portrayed to young girls. Where are those concerned citizens and parents now? Why are they not boycotting Britney Spears albums and protesting her? Why are they not calling for studios to stop employing Lindsay Lohan? I have yet to hear about boycotts of the Hilton Hotels, or any of the many products that Paris Hilton endorses.

Now I am not saying that we should all rise up against these girls, I am simply posing the question, why aren't we?

Are parents today just too busy? Are they perhaps too far out of the loop? Maybe they just don't care. I don't have the answer. What I do know is that these girls, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan didn't just barge in to our homes. They were invited. Not only did we invite them in to our homes once, we keep bringing them back.

An 11-year-old girl doesn't have the money to buy a Britney Spears CD, let alone a concert ticket. How is it that a 13-year-old gets to the movie theater to see a Lindsay Lohan movie, or has the money to buy one of her DVD's?

The point is: it is a parent's responsibility to know what their kids are being exposed to. It is their job to monitor what their children are watching and learning. Most importantly, it is a parent's duty to talk to their children and to teach them suitable behavior, not Britney Spears', Paris Hilton's or Lindsay Lohan's.

And these are the understandings that we need to pass on to the younger generation; the ones who take for granted that what their favorite DJ tells them is cool, really is. They don't know about payola and bribery and corporate sponsorships. It is our job to teach them.

It's overreacting to try to say that celebrities are ruining America. Don't get me wrong, America is being ruined-by the neo-con war-mongering agenda, by the fundamentalist right, by rampant consumerism, but not by some simple minded celebs...

It is the understanding that Britney will be making a comeback. What we can do is not buy her new album. Of course that won't stop her label from shoving any of her new stuff down our throats by coercing the radio stations to play her music 24/7.
