Are Buy One Get One Free Offers a Good Deal?

Teresa Hoyt
It's a very popular promotion. BOGO buy one get one, usually followed by the word free. But are buy one get one free offers really a good deal? How could buy one get one free not be a good deal?

First of all it depends on the price. If its buy one get one free how much does one cost? Too much? I often find grocery items marked up a dollar or two and then sold buy one get one free. It's not that great of a deal and would have been better if they didn't offer buy one get one free and didn't monkey with the price. The buy one get one free offer may simply distract you from the fact that the item costs way too much.

Do you need two? Buy one get one free if you only need one is not such a great deal unless you have a close personal friend you can share with. Especially in the grocery aisle, does a single woman need 2 bags of Doritos's? Again, it would be better if the items were at a lower price and not buy one get one free. If you go shopping for a pair of shoes and are confronted with a buy one get one free offer you most certainly will get two, whether you need them or not.

Can you store or save the extra item? If you put one away for a rainy day, buy one get one free may be a great way to create your own little stockpile for when you need it. If the item won't spoil, you can put one away, but if it is fresh meat or produce, the clock starts ticking immediately. Make sure those buy one get one free shoes will still be in style when you get around to wearing them. It's also necessary to make sure you don't lose or misplace the free items. If you forget what you have, you may as well not have it.

If finances allow, donate extra items to a person who needs them or a charitable organization that can put them to good use. Buy one get one free may give you an opportunity to give.

Buy one get one free restaurant meals can be a great deal. If you drink water and skip dessert two can eat for the price of one. If you get buy one get one free take out, put a meal away for tomorrow. Buy one get one free movie tickets, admissions to events and museums are also a great deal. If you are alone, or have an odd number in your party, offer the extra free one to someone in line. They might even split the cost with you.

Buy one get one free is almost always a good deal as long as you can use the things you are getting for free and if the price of one has not been marked up significantly. Take advantage of those deals.
