Are You a Candidate for Lasik Eye Surgery?

Jody Morse
There is no doubt that the inability to see can have a huge impact on your life. Some people do not like knowing that they will need to wear contacts or glasses for the rest of their lives. Not only can both of these things be an annoyance for some people, but in some cases, the cost of eye care can get to be very expensive. This is the main reason that Lasik eye surgery can change the lives of some people. While you will not be guaranteed 20/20 vision, you will see a major improvement and you will not have to wear glasses or contacts for the rest of your life - which is more than you can say than if you did not have the surgery. Of course, there are a number of different factors which may determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for Lasik eye surgery. Read on to learn if this procedure may be something that is a good choice for you.

Would you like to reduce the amount of time that you need to wear glasses each day? While some people do not ever need to wear glasses or contact lenses after the surgery, some people may need to continue wearing them for certain functions - such as reading. Overall, however, you can feel rest assured to know that you will not need to wear glasses nearly as much as you would if you did not have the surgery.

Aside from your vision problems, do you have healthy eyes in general? If your eyes are unhealthy, chances are that Lasik eye surgery is not an option for you. Some of the types of problems which you cannot have in order to be eligible for Lasik eye surgery include cataracts, glaucoma, corneal thinning disorders (and other corneal disorders), or other eye conditions. You also should not have a history of dry eye. If you have had ocular herpes, you may want to wait a few years before you consider going through with Lasik.

Do you meet the age requirements for Lasik eye surgery? You must be at least eighteen years old in order to be eligible for this procedure. You also must have stable vision for between one to two years - meaning that you must be in the same prescription glasses or contact lenses. If you do not meet these requirements, you may not (and should not) go through with the Lasik surgery procedure.

Is your vision problem one which can be improved or corrected through Lasik eye surgery? Some of these vision problems include nearsightedness, farsightedness, blurred vision which is due to an abnormal cornea shape, and astigmatisms. If your vision problems have been caused by something else, you will not qualify for Lasik eye surgery.

Do you have realistic hopes for the results which you will see through Lasik eye surgery? There are many people who hope that their sight will be corrected one hundred percent after the procedure. In reality, however, this is not likely. Most people only experience strong visual improvements - rather than corrections. You still may have to wear some form of glasses, and you may not see as perfectly as you are hoping. It is important for you to understand this prior to surgery.
