What Causes Cramps?
The About.com guide to women's health explains uterine cramping (dysmenorrhea) as the feeling of pressure, dull aching, sometimes tingling or burning sensation in a woman's abdomen during the time of menstruation, or her period. They are caused by prostaglandins and are a very common, though sometimes uncomfortable occurrence.
Is Cramping an Early Symptom of Pregnancy?
Many women are surprised to learn that cramping which often feels like menstrual pain or discomfort can often be a symptom of early pregnancy! Ladies who are trying to get pregnant often wonder whether the stomach discomfort or minor back pain they experience around the time their period should be arriving is indeed the symptom of pregnancy. Sometimes mild cramping is one of the first signs of pregnancy, and often occurs around the time a woman's menstrual cycle is set to begin.
What Causes Cramping in Early Pregnancy?
There are a few causes of early pregnancy cramping. Sometimes the fertilized egg burrowing into the lining of the uterus (implantation) can cause slight cramping as well as light spotting. Also, the ovary which released the egg that has been fertilized can cause some discomfort on the side that the egg was released. Additionally, when a woman becomes pregnant, the uterus begins preparing to house the fetus. Even in the earliest weeks after conception, the uterus can expand and contract, and cause slight discomfort and cramping.
Early pregnancy discomfort or cramping is usually no cause for concern. However, if you experience severe pain and cramping, it could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy (a fertilized egg that has attached outside the uterus) or an impending miscarriage. It's important to remember that normal uterine cramping in early pregnancy is typically very mind and mimics menstrual cramps.
In short, cramping is an early pregnancy symptom for some women and is typically no cause for concern. However, if you have confirmed pregnancy and are experiencing cramping that is concerning you, please seek out the care and advice of a quality health care professional.
