Are Ergonomic Chairs Considered a Luxury at Work?

Dougie Lloyd
Every business is cutting back costs in any area they can to save money. However, office seating should not be one of those areas. Ergonomic chairs are a necessity not a luxury, allowing employees to be more productive. Providing good quality ergonomic chairs is a good choice for the long term and short term.

According to a report found at bharatbhasha.com a good ergonomic chair is a very crucial piece of equipment when working in an office environment.

Ergonomic chairs are used by factory workers as well as heavy equipment and machinery operators, similar to the military using control panels, flight decks and other equipment. Why shouldn't office workers benefit from ergonomic chairs, too? Since office workers use many different types of equipment such as computers, typewriters, telephones, and copiers, ergonomic chairs are just as important as any other piece of equipment. They interact with machinery and equipment more so than warehouse and production workers.

Office workers perform their duties seated throughout the day. The idea is to incorporate concepts of sociology, psychology, bio-mechanics, physiology into the task and equipment to accommodate the people doing office tasks. Ergonomic chairs can help eliminate bad posture which may cause injuries in the work place.

The design of the seating used can also lead to bad posture. Sitting in a chair that is too small is bound to harm a person's posture. Tasks should be performed with a low level of effort. Muscles are continuously working even in the sitting position. When the muscles are relaxed then good posture has been achieved.

The height of the ergonomic chair can be adjusted to suit your preference and needs. The height should be adjusted so that your forearms are parallel or on a slope toward the keyboard. Your shoulders should be relaxed, and feet on the floor. The lumbar needs to be supported for the curve of the spine and you should be seated straight back into the chair with little or no pressure on the calves. You should sit in an upright position. Don't sit on the edge of your chair; you should sit completely back in your chair.

The computer should be in front of you, do not set the computer at an angle. Avoid twisting and turning at your desk to see your monitor. All other equipment such as a calculator, telephone or mouse should be placed in front of you.

Rather than using a telephone use a headset to prevent reaching over and hurting posture. This way you can type properly using both hands. This can come in handy especially if you are involved in customer service. Keep the space under the desk free and open with no clutter. Change tasks occasionally and walk away from the workstation to stretch. Do not stay in one position to long. As you can see ergonomic chairs is not a luxury and should be used to help prevent any injuries to your back while you are working.
