Getting to Your Destination Safely

Driving your car in winter is always somewhat dangerous. However, there are some essential winter accessories you should have in your car in winter to protect you and others that may be with you. Listed below are the most essential accessories to have in your car and why you need them.

• A flashlight and extra batteries is one of the essential winter accessories for your car. Imagine being stuck in snow or having your car stall on the road at night or on a bleak winter day. It would be difficult to find the problem in the dark, or to find the tools that might remedy the problem. You could also use a flashlight as a flare to alert other traffic on the road where you are stuck or stalled.

• Do not forget your cell phone and an auto charger in the car. If you do not have a cell phone, it is important for you to get one for driving in winter. This is much better than trying to flag someone down or walking to find help.

• A blanket or two would be another of the essential winter accessories for your car. Two blankets might serve the purpose better if you have another person with you. While you are checking to see why you are stalled or maybe stuck in snow, your passenger can wrap up in a blanket .

• If you are stuck in snow, one of the most essential winter accessories for your car will be some sand or gravel to help you to get out of that snow. Put a good portion of sand or gravel in a bag and place it in the trunk of your car or wherever you have space and if you get stuck, put some as close to the tires as possible. Then try backing and going forward a few times and then make a real effort to go foreward and drive right out of that snow. Cat litter will also work well for getting unstuck from snow.

• It is also a good idea to have a snow shovel to add to the essential accessories for your car. Shoveling some of the snow away from the tires as well as from under the car might help you to get unstuck more quickly and easier.

• An ice scraper is a necessity if your car windows are iced from sitting while you work to get out of the snow. If you don't have an ice scraper, you might use a piece of cardboard or anything with a sharp edge.

• In the event your car will not start, a jumper cable would be a handy accessory to have for your car.

• A spare jacket and work gloves are two essential winter accessories for your car. You can wear these articles while getting out of the snow or getting your car running and then put your dry things back on as you head to your destination..

• A first-aid kit is an extremely important addition to the essential winter accessories for your car. In fact, there should be a first-aid kit in your car no matter the season.

• Flares are another item you might consider in case you become stuck or stalled on the road or highway. Two flares would work well - one for the front of the car and one for the back of the car. However, if you do not have flares, a flashlight would suffice on a dark and snowy night.
