Are Extended Warranties and Service Contracts on RV's Worth the Money?

Cheryl Dennett
When purchasing expensive items, such as an RV camper, it can be difficult to decide whether or not to purchase service agreements and extended warranties. There are the worries about the costs of repairs down the road. Here is some information to help you decide if you should spend the money for these services.

There are two opinions on extended warranties. Some people will tell you that these services are very necessary. They believe that they will make your life more secure. Others believe that they are another way for RV dealers to take money from customers. Well, it really is up to you. You have to decide how much your future security is worth.

The Service Contract Industry Council has admitted that eighty percent of extended warranty owners have never filed a claim against them. The newer RV campers are usually well made. They do not breakdown very often at all. When you buy a new RV you will get a manufacturer's warranty. The length of this warranty will vary according to the manufacturer. It is also true that many RV owners are able to fix the small problems that happen while on the road. They can take of the routine maintenance of their RV's.

It is a known fact that when you buy a new RV the salesperson is going to try and get you to buy an extended or service warranty. The dealerships will make a lot of money from them. Especially if you never use them. Plus the salesperson will earn more commission on your sale if you purchase one. Do not let them use high pressure sales tactics to force you to buy something you do not want or can not afford. Only purchase this option if you truly want to do so.

If you are considering purchasing this service, be sure to read it over carefully. Make sure that the service you are specifically looking for is included. Do not take the dealer's word for it. Read it yourself. Be aware of the restrictions and deductibles. It may not be worth it, at all. You may be restricted to getting service in a limited area. If you plan to use your RV camper for long trips, it will be useless if you are far from home when the RV breaks down.

If you decide to purchase an extended warranty or service contract, be sure you keep the paperwork in the RV. It will save you money if you have the proof of coverage with you. You do not want to use cash you have on hand for your trip. Even if you get reimbursed later, this could still put a damper on vacation fun.

If the dealer offers an extended warranty on a used RV, this may be a wise choice. Again, look it over carefully. Consider the condition of the camper.

No matter what your decision on these services, be sure to use them wisely. And, if you do preventative maintenance as much as possible, you may not need the extended warranties or service contracts. Hopefully, you will never have to find out.
