Are You Getting Enough Vitamin C?

Patti Stafford
Getting plenty of Vitamin C has been all the rage during cold and flu season for the past several years. We know it helps fight off cold germs and helps us get over a cold more quickly, but is it still enough?

Studies indicate the body should be saturated with Vitamin C at all times to maintain optimal health- not just during cold and flu season.

The RDA for Vitamin C is 60 milligrams a day, which is adequate to keep you just above the risk of scurvy. But scientists suggest Vitamin C should permeate all the body's cells for optimum health. The cells should be as drenched with Vitamin C as they are with water.

Vitamin C researcher, Emil Ginter, Ph.D. from Czechoslovakia, discovered that maximum saturation not only helps fight off the production of gall stones, but helps optimize health, helps lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, helps detox the body of histamines and is a main component of wound healing. Vitamin C is also the cement mixture of sorts that binds cells together keeping them healthy, and regulates the formation of collagen.

Vitamin C saturation is also vitally important during stressful situations, and in fact you need more than just total saturation during times of stress. Stress can come from worry, pollution in the air, surgery, etc. There's a host of things that cause us to feel stress; being stuck in traffic on the way to work, not liking our job, kids getting into trouble. All of these situations cause the body to use more Vitamin C above and beyond the healthy saturation level.

Researchers suggest the RDA of Vitamin C should be at least 200 milligrams a day instead of 60. Add today's lifestyle and stress factors and we need more than that. Studies indicate taking 200 milligrams several times a day. Vitamin C is used by the body more efficiently if it's taken in smaller doses throughout the day instead of all at once.

If you smoke, take birth control pills, live around industrial toxins or pesticides, you need more Vitamin C. All of these harmful substances cause a decrease in levels of Vitamin C.

Worried about not getting enough Vitamin C? Afraid it's too troublesome to haul around a bottle of this vital nutrient? Well Halls has a solution to that problem with their Vitamin C drops. How much easier can it get than to pop a Vitamin C rich candy in your mouth several times a day?
