Are Goldfish Easy to Care For?

Shannon Frye
One of the most popular types of fish is the Goldfish. Most people think that you can purchase a Golfish, throw it in a goldfish bowl and it will do just fine. The Goldfish is not as easy to take care of as you might think. If you are thinking about purchasing a Goldfish, you should know that some Goldfish live to be over 5 years old. The average lifespan of a Goldfish is a couple of years because Goldfish usually get sick at least once every couple of years. Saving a Goldfish from near death is quite impossible to do the second time around.

Goldfish are very dirty fish. If you have a Goldfish tank, you will want to purchase a filter which is too large for the tank. This way you will be over cleaning your fish tank. You can also purchase several fish filters to put on your fish tank. Goldfish are very messy and perhaps one of the most dirty fish that you can purchase. They go to the bathroom all of the time and they don't eat as much food as you put in the tank. That means that the extra food is sitting at the bottom of the fish tank. If you want to purchase a Goldfish you will want to place several filters on your fish tank.

Goldfish need a variety in their diet or they will get constipated. You do not want this to happen. Dedicate at least one day a week that you do not feed the fish. This will help to clear out the digestive track. If your fish get constipated, they will float upside down in your fish tank. Another very important thing to remember is that you never want to feed your Goldfish by throwing the food on the top of the water. If Goldfish suck the food off of the top of the water they will suck in air, which will inflate the swim bladder. This causes the fish to swim upside down and the fish will not be able to swim right.

You will want to either purchase pellet food which sinks right away or place the flakes into the stream coming out of your filter. This will force the fish flakes to the bottom of the fish tank. Goldfish are smart, as soon as they see you they will know they are getting to eat. They will start sucking food off of the top of the water even before the flakes enter the water. You will want to look at the fish several times a day to throw them off. Remember to feed the fish frozen food such as brine shrimp as well because this will help to clear out the digestive track.

If you know all of this information and about signs of illness, you will have no problems taking care of your Goldfish.
