Dostinex is a drug that is called a dopamine agonist. What this means is that, Dostinex can act just like the chemical dopamine, which is found naturally in your body. There has been evidence that certain chemicals found in your brain can cause headaches if their balances are interrupted. The two main chemicals, or neurotransmitters,as they are often called, are serotonin and dopamine. These two neurotransmitters are very important to a lot of bodily functions such as, sleep, pain perception and emotions. An imbalance in these brain chemicals are the cause of depression and a lot of other mental disorders. So what does this have to do with headaches?
Serotonin and dopamine have been studied for a long time for their connection to migraines. When a migraine develops it has been noted that the serotonin level in the brain is decreased. A decrease in serotonin causes blood vessels to swell, therefore adding pressure to the nerves in the brain and a headache can be the result.
Studies have suggested that dopamine can act as trigger for migraine and headache pain. Certain people are genetically predisposed to the effects of dopamine in the body. They have inherited a hypersensitivity to dopamine and it's ability to cause nerve cell excitation. This can lead to the development of a migraine or a headache. Dopamine has also been associated with the cause of nausea and vomiting when a migraine headache is present.
Since Dostinex is a drug that mimics dopamine, it only makes sense to conclude that Dostinex can cause a headache. If you are one of those people who are genetically predisposed to be hypersensitive to the effects of dopamine and are taking Dostinex for a medical condition, it could be the cause of your headaches.
The most important thing to do is talk to your doctor about your headaches. Do not stop taking the Dostinex on you own until you talk with your doctor. The two of you can examine the need for continuing Dostinex or the possibility of switching to another medication that may have less side effects.
Dostinex can be a very effective drug for the treatment of your medical condition. It is important that you do your homework on all of the medicines that you may be taking. Note their side effects and dangers. Keep an open line of communication with your doctor about your concerns. If you are experiencing frequent headaches, just be aware that Dostinex may be the cause.
