Are You a Horse Lover? Ways to Decorate Your Home

Jan S
Decorating a room or entire house to the equestrian theme can be fun and bring out the artist in you. The world of the horse is so varied that you have a great number of horse themes to choose from. Here is a simple list of just a few of them:

Horse racing
Polo
Fox hunting
Dressage
Wild horses
Ponies
Horses of the American Indians
Cowboys and their horses
The various horse breeds
Farm horses
Horses pulling carts and wagons

The list can also include the fantasy horses like Pegasus and unicorns.

Depending on your choice of horse theme the color scheme needs to blend nicely with it. For example Pegasus is a white horse so the colors chosen should complement the room as well as the Pegasus theme. Pastels go good with the white horse and it works well as a bedroom or bathroom theme. Horse racing has lots of bright solid colors that is reflected in the jockey's silks and the saddle pads. The horse racing theme would be equal with the type of rooms that could be decorated with any major sports theme. The farm horse theme would be great in either a kitchen or dining room and could combine the elements of farm life in general. The colors would be derived from the farm field themselves and could either reflect the spring crops of green or the harvest colors of yellow straw.

We have 3 rooms in our home with equestrian themes. The bathroom is painted pale blue and has the fantasy horse theme with Pegasus and Unipegs (Pegasus with a unicorn horn). There are 2 shelves, each with 2 statues or plates depicting the theme on them. There is one large framed print of a mother Pegasus and foal. The accent pieces such as the soap dish are just plain white porcelain so that the theme is not over powering to the visitor. Towels are solid in color and topped with an accent hand towel with an embroidered white unicorn on it.

Our dining room has framed photos and drawings of our own personal horses that we have owned through the years. We have an oak dining table that is topped with a table cloth that has pictures of English style bits on it. We even have dishes that have horses on them as well as a matching set of salt and pepper shakers. The dining room has a feel of the English countryside with the photos of our horses showing them either without tack or just wearing a halter.

Our last room with a decidedly horsey touch to it is my daughter's bedroom. It has a blue sky and a prairie painted on the walls. Wallpaper cutouts of running horses are randomly placed on the wall where the sky and prairie meet. She has a large collection of Breyer horses that she has displayed on 2 large oak shelves. Three large framed posters depicting show horses rounds out the room.

Shopping for your horse themed decoration does not have to be expensive. You can find a horse poster and frame it as an accent piece to a room or buy some fabric with a horse theme and make a few throw pillows. If you have any feed stores near you, there you can find lots of horse items to use as decoration. Horse equipment either new or used can be hung on the wall as decoration. Old bits or horse harness works well. A shelf set up in a room with books about horses on it is simple way to add a horse accent to a room.

Lastly try to give a room a touch of the equestrian theme and not over power it. Too much of a good thing can kill the mood of a room.
