Are Lazy People Having More Fun?

Laziness Can Be Good Thing, Well at Least for Some of Us

My mother always called me a lazy bum whenever she would see me just loafing around the house. Of course she was right. I was a teenager with no real ambitions. My humble response was to say "but, mom there is nothing to do". It never dawned on me that she would fill my days with a list of things to do around the house. BTW - The Marine Corps quickly cured me of my laziness'.

Needless to say, no one will ever call you lazy when you're in uniform or working hard to raise a family. Through out my adulthood, I just had to find something to occupy my time off from work.

When you're a homeowner and raising a family you hardly have any time for yourself. No, vacation doesn't measure up. You still have to keep moving by finding ways for the kids to enjoy the fun and excitement of being on vacation. Now that I am retired I can officially do nothing! Don't laugh! I know you are saying "he is a lazy retired bum". (LOL)

Being retired offers no respite from work. You have a compelling need to keep doing something. You must keep on moving around or slowly wither away. I am happy to say that I have a cover story that our "pop culture" gave me to use as a valid excuse for milling around the house.

When my son asked me to help him with his yard work I simply say "I would but I need to chill out a while, sorry". I thought that vernacular would work well, but he responded with "Is it your nap time, dad?" This is truly a motivational retort and a call to action. We loaded up his truck with "my" yard tools and spent the day doing yard work.

I have a woodworking hobby that I enjoy but most of the time is spent reading woodworking books and magazines. When I do find a project to craft I have to find the time to do it. Now, my only time for laziness is falling asleep on the couch while watching my favorite TV show. And then being awaken by my wife and told to go to bed!
