Are You Looking for a Cheap Dog Toy?

Deborah Anderson
The dog toy industry is huge, just stroll down any dog isle in any store and you will have proof. Dog toys come in all shapes and sizes and make many different noises from crunching to squeaking, but did you know that there is a dog toy that you can give your dog that actually does not cost any extra money? I found this out accidentally one day, thanks to my Miniature Schnauzer.

My Miniature Schnauzer, Cody, loves to play ball and Frisbee, but she has also been known to play with a stick. Often times we will use a stick to play with her instead of making a trip inside the house to look for a ball or a Frisbee. This dog loves to catch and retrieve and will keep going long after we have stopped. On one particular day I was playing catch with Cody using a stick and somehow an empty coke bottle got substituted for the stick. Now Cody plays "bottle" any chance she gets and we have to watch where we put our water bottles or coke bottles because she does not care if it is empty or not.

We have found that adding about half a bottle of water to the bottle being used for a toy is an excellent way to cool our dog off in the hot summer days. She will eventually poke holes in the bottle and she will drink the water out of the bottle, but it also comes out when it is thrown and will occasionally get her wet while she is bringing it back to one of use. Generally when she bites through the bottle we quit throwing the bottle and just let her chew on it. It is not near as much fun for us to get wet as it is for her!

Now days dog toy manufacturers have decided to cash in on the "bottle" play and have begun manufacturing and selling covers for the bottles. I for one have not bought one of these as I do not really see any reason for it. They claim it is for the safety of the dog, I believe it is for the pocket book of the manufacturer as my dog has been playing "bottle" for years now and has never had anything happen to her. Maybe we have just been lucky, I do not know. But I do know that my dog is just as happy with playing "bottle" as she is with one of the store bought toys that she will tear up anyway and I am happy with not watching a toy that I spent money on be tore up in a days time.
