Are Matthew Stafford and President Obama Both Saviors?

The NFL Draft & Presidential Election Both Symbols of Hope

What do President Barack Obama and Matthew Stafford have in common? Well, both men are looked on to be the savior, one of a country and the other of a team. Barack Obama was elected President of the United States and Matthew Stafford will most likely be selected with the first pick of the NFL draft, by the Detroit Lions. Now, admittedly Stafford's job as an NFL quarterback will be easier, but both men are taken over something that's struggling, one a nation, the other a franchise.

The Detroit Lions, who finished last season 0-16, need a sign of hope, someone to believe in and like Obama has been for many Americans, Stafford can be that symbol of hope for Lions fans. However, Stafford or whomever the Lions take, won't be able to single handedly raise Detroit from the NFL basement. Detroit must make sure this years first round picks are better then most of their former first round selections and with the former Millen administration gone, Lions fans are cautiously optimistic.

Last year, the Lions selected Boston College offensive tackle, Gosder Cherilus with the 17th pick in the first round. The Lions previous picks were, Calvin Johnson, Ernie Sims, Roy Williams, Mike Williams, Kevin Jones, Charles Rogers, and Joey Harrington. Of those players, only three remain on the Lion's roster, Sims, Johnson and Cherilus. It's hard to build a winning franchise when your first round picks don't stay on the field and contribute to your team.

Unfortunately, the Lions won't get a bailout from the US government, all the bailout money in Detroit, went to the car manufacturers. So, the Lions are going to have to fix their mistakes themselves, and with two picks in the first round of this years draft, Detroit could be off to a good start. Like President Obama has surrounded himself with his team to guide the country back to prosperity, the Lions must assemble a team, that will first stay together, then work together to turn this franchise around.

America was ready for change and elected President Barack Obama, a symbol of change for many. Saturday, Detroit Lions fans will be watching the NFL draft, and they too are ready for change. The soon to be newest members of the Detroit Lions won't have a job as tough as President of the United States, but they will have a challenge, working together to resurrect a long suffering franchise.
