Are Meat Cupcakes the Latest Trend in Food?

Karen Barnes
When I first read about meat cupcakes with mashed potato icing on Zap To It, I was appalled and grossed out to say the least. Ick and gross came to mind while my stomach thought vomiting was the best option to this food trend.

The meat cupcake picture listed on Themeatloafbakery.com website that grossed me out the most was the Loaf-A-Roma cupcake. It looks like something one would hurl after a night a bingeful drinking and eating at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

After looking at the rest of the items listed on The Meatloaf Bakery's website, the rest of their menu didn't seem so bad. Any version of your normal beef meatloaf or even a ham loaf is often served with mashed potatoes. When I fix my basic rectangular meatloaf, I like to scoop up potatoes, corn, and a bite of meatloaf. After realizing I eat my meatloaf the same way the meat cupcakes are put together, it doesn't seem so gross after all.

The commenters on the Zap To It site, agreed with the NPR folks that tasted the hamburger and mash potato topped cupcake. Sylvia Mzz even brought up huge meatballs with all kinds of toppings which the Loaf-A-Rama cupcake is, but it still looks disgusting in the picture.

Lucille Banks brings up shepherd's pie. I know of quite a few people who make those. I am not one of them who makes shepherd's pie. Not that I have anything against this meat and potatoes dish, I never have enough leftovers to be able to make one since that's what people use.

I have tried Kentucky Fried Chicken's Bowls. In retrospect, the meat cupcakes wouldn't be much different from those, meatloaf, ham loaf, or a Shepherd's pie. If you're family isn't too particular about their dinner being stacked as a cupcake, this might be a creative way to make dinner one night.

If you're family is anything like mine, they'd give you the "have you lost your mind" look. That look would be followed by the question, "What were you thinking?"

I have to admit - my first reaction was "Gross!" But I often make Shepherd's Pie, and I love it, and it's really no different. Interesting article!
