Are Microwavable Serving Bowls Really One Serving?

Read the Label!

When I was working, I took my lunch to work. Many times, I would not get to go out and grab a quick lunch and was forced to stay in and possibly zap something that I purchased ahead of time and kept in my desk in case of emergency. This emergency could have been bad weather or just a bout of laziness or even because I had a deadline to meet and did not want to take a full lunch hour. For whatever reason; I had my stash ready to go. When joining Weight Watchers, I was forced to check the points by reading the labels and calculating just how much of my daily allotment I was using for whatever I ate.

Hello! Those microwavable bowls in the familiar red label that we have all come to know and love with delicious soup was packaged just for us right? Well if we are two people, it was. Now tell me who is going to share this bowl with another person? Wasn't it made so you could just pop in your spoon and eat? Well upon reading the label, it contains two servings, so if you are going to eat the whole thing; remember to double the calories, and Weight Watchers points if you happen to be a Weight Watcher. Most of all; if you are on a sodium restricted diet; double that salt!

So taking a look through my cabinets, I found a microwavable bowl of Kraft Easy Mac. At least the label tells us that the entire package is one serving so there is no need for math here. The package contains 220 calories of which 35 calories are from fat. The sodium is 700 mg or 29% is salt. I am a salt junkie, so this is no problem for me, but being a Weight Watcher this little bowl will cost me five points.

For a real treat if you are a Weight Watcher; try Progresso Light Vegetable and Noodle soup. This soup is endorsed by Weight Watchers and as the label says it has ZERO POINTS per serving. One serving contains one cup and the can is a two serving size. Now one of the things I learned by going to WW, is that if you eat the whole can; you must count it as more than the zero points as the label says. So calculating the entire can via the sliding scale or the little calculator that Weight Watchers sells, it comes out to 2 POINTS. So you have the choice when you are changing your lifestyle, as WW likes to tell us; we are not DIETING, we are changing our lives for the better.

So do I want to use zero points and share my Progresso light soup with a friend, eat the entire can by myself for 2 points, have the Kraft Easy Mac for 5 points or use one of the red label ones and calculate the points for two servings? It is entirely up to you!
