Ancient people were fascinated with images reflected in water and often regarded these reflections as messages from another realm. Distortions in water currents were interpreted as reflections of future and past events.
Once mirrors were invented, many ancient people regarded them as mysterious and magical tools to view spiritual guides and receive messages from beyond, as well.
Many relegate these beliefs to superstition and ignorance. But what if we are wrong? Could mirrors really be portals to the spirit world?
Some would say, "Yes!" Wiccans have long used the mysterious black mirror for scrying to contact the other side, and claim to be able to foresee events or receive spirit communication via an ordinary mirror. The proper rituals, of course, must accompany this, usually involving candlelight and darkness, where the viewer gazes intently into the mirror for long periods of time.
Once focus begins to soften, it is said that images of events, beings, and even past or future versions of your own image will appear. These are all interpreted as signs from beyond that bring to the viewer information to benefit everyday life.
Wiccans warn that protective rituals should be performed to prevent negative spirits from remaining in the home. You should not attempt to communicate with spirits using a mirror as a portal, unless you know what you are doing and are properly protected.
Many cultures believe that a mirror must be covered when there is a death in the home to prevent the soul, or spirit, of the departed from being trapped in the mirror. Some even believe that if you look into the mirror, after a death in the home, that the recently deceased's spirit will take your soul into the mirror where it will remain trapped forever.
Still others routinely cover the face of the mirror at night while sleeping to prevent the soul from entering the mirror as it leaves the sleeping body to travel to remote areas, and presumably to prevent unwanted spirits from entering our world.
But what if you don't perform any rituals and you don't actively call on the spirits? Can a mirror somehow become a portal to the spirit world without your knowledge?
Countless numbers of people have reported glimpsing images of beings reflected in the mirror other than themselves. These people claim that they have seen images of ghosts behind them in the mirror, yet when they turn and look behind them, nothing is there. Some interpret this as spirits within the mirror and others say that it is merely a reflection of a spirit in the home that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Movement, or images, reflected in the mirror are much more likely to be natural distortions of light and shadow that resemble the human form than actual beings from another dimension.
The human mind possesses the uncanny ability to create familiar images from the unknown so that we can make sense of what we see. In part, we see what we believe we will see and rarely see images that are outside our realm of experience.
Still others claim that a mirror creates a portal to the spirit world. It seems that some conditions must be met before a mirror will actually summon spirits.
Before a mirror functions as a portal, spirits must first be summoned through the mirror, much like summoning spirits with an Ouija Board. Once permission is granted for these spirits from other realms to enter through the mirror, it appears that the portal is opened and spirits are free to enter at will.
There is, of course, no proof that mirrors can actually become spirit portals. The claims of activity surrounding particular mirrors do provide some support for the theory.
Psychics claim to detect the presence of otherworldly beings emanating from the mirror and its general vicinity. These tend to occur in haunted locations where investigations may be likely. Whether or not the mirror actually provides a portal for spirits or is simply in the same vicinity as unexplained paranormal activity is uncertain.
If you or someone you know has experienced spirit activity that you believe has entered through a mirror, please share your story here for others to read.

few years ago a voice kept telling me things.. usually good things, but then , after someoneclose died it became "evil" .. i mean .. he told me the person that diied was going to die and he told me exactly the minute he died that hes dead.. then it kept threatening me with things like" if u don't do .. someone close to me will die".. so i had to follow his rules.. but that wasn't enough until , in the mirror, while just staring at me for a few seconds... another face was coming over mine.. an unclear face.. i got scared .. then i could see "him" behind me when looking in the mirror.. but not clear again ... i became dependent of mirrors.. once i could see him alive like not in the mirror.. and since then i can soometimes see him when i am alone in the room.. he can move things it's like he is alive.. i don't know.. first i thought my imagination but then..
i would die if a saw a monster or something else thats not supose to be there other then my reflection
Ten years ago, I lived in the top floor of an old Victorian hotel - presumably built in the 1840s. I often saw images and movement in my mirrors, on television screens, and anything that was shiny. It would happen when I was alone and often times, during the night. When I tried to cover the mirrors with blankets and sheets, someTHING would take them off. It scared me so much that I moved out.
I took a hot shower so the room was steamy. I was in front of my dresser mirror and there was a name written on the mirror that noone could have done. It said MABUS. Can anyone tell me what this could mean? I researched the name, but I want to know how or why this would appear on my mirror. I live alone and am new to a country, so I have no friends here to play a prank on me like this.

I have tempted fate a number of times. Tried to call spirits into my mirror, though in a very childish and rudimentary way. I tried to summo the candyman. The legend goes that if you look into a mirror and say "candyman" five times. He will appear through the mirror and kill you. This is best done in a darkened room.
I also tried "Bloody Mary" which I feel holds more likeliness to be true. I said her names three times and spun around in front of the mirror. So far I am still alive, though some say she slowly drives you insane... (BTW this was done in bathrooms, so the mirror in my bedroom, if this article is infact correct should still be safe)
As well as the mirrors, a good friend of mine told me that the more eyes you have watching you the better. So if you have a haunted mirror, stock up on glassy eyed teddy bears.
I have never seen spirits in mirrors but they frighten me. I cover my mirror with a blanket every night. When the mirror is not covered i feel extremely watched from the direction of that mirror. I also feel as though there is another presence in the room with me..It just doesn't feel private anywhere where there are mirrors.
I had extreme night terrors as a child. I believe I may be sensitive to the paranormal as i have also heard voices talking..though too inaudible to make out what they were saying but it was enough to scare the wits out of me and all i could think to do was run out of my house. for whatever reason it stopped and i felt safe as long as i was outside. My stepmother covered all mirrors in my bedroom with curtains at nighttime and the terrors stopped.
well...i never really saw ghosts in the mirrors but i sense 'something' very wrong in mirrors in bathrooms or dark places
Since i was little i'm afraid to look at mirrors but i never saw ghosts or signs from spirits in the mirror.
ever since i was 8yrs oldive been seeing spirits in my mirriors and even in the glass of tvs the most that i can get out of that is they're trying to tell me something and the i could see about 10yrs in the future
