Are NBA Rules on Technical Fouls Too Harsh?
Piston's Wallace Suspended for One Game After Receiving Too Many Technical Fouls
The 18th technical was called in San Antonio in a Pistons loss. The suspension was in effect on Sunday as Wallace missed the Piston's match-up with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Pistons did win the game 121-95 without the presence of Wallace.
The NBA rule for technical fouls says that when a player reaches the 16 technical foul mark on a season, a suspension will be handed down to that player. The rule also states that every technical foul beyond that will result in a one game suspension without pay.
Wallace has been quoted saying, "It's just another 'Sheed Wallace rule." He seems to feel like the NBA is cracking down specifically on him. Wallace is known as perhaps the most expressive player in the entire league. He is never afraid to express his opinion to referees and other players.
The new rule came last season as a result of NBA referees complaining about being shown up to much on the court by players.
Many thought that this rule would calm down Rasheed Wallace a little bit but obviously that is not the case. Though he can sometimes be disrespectful, Wallace seems to be more misunderstood than anything. Sometimes his enthusiasm for the game of basketball is taken wrongly by officials as him trying to show them up in front of thousands of people.
The one game suspension without pay is too much to penalize a player too many technicals. Everyone gets excited in the heat of the moment during a game and split second decisions are made, and this often times results in a technical foul. Technical fouls are part of the game and that should be understood. A small fine at a certain number of technicals would be more appropriate instead of having the suspension effect the player's team.
There seems to be no changing Rasheed Wallace. He appears to be unaffected by the rule. The only way that this rule would work is if punishments are made more harsh. Though he should take it easy for the rest of the season because his team really needs him as they get ready for the playoffs, Wallace will come out again next year and probably start racking up the technical fouls again. The fans love him, he is a great player, and he shows more enthusiasm about the game then any other player in the NBA. This is what should be remembered about Rasheed Wallace; not the amount of technical fouls he receives.

Post a CommentGood article. I just think its fine to fine based on technicals, but not suspend. There may be an image problem with athletes, but it isn't cause they complain on the floor.
