Are You the Next Victim of the "Bender Scam?"

Lori Holden
Recently my mom ordered the "Bender Ball" and I can already see that she is getting excellent results. My interest was piqued, and, after a smooth sales pitch from a late night infomercial, I was sucked into the illusion and ready to buy. After visiting the website, I decided that 12.99 (for DVD instead of VHS) was a pretty good deal for a piece of exercise equipment that actually works. My delight, however, was put on hold when I discovered that the shipping charge was 7.99 bringing the total to more than 20 dollars, double the advertised price of 9.99. Instead of paying outrageous and, what seem to me, unjustified shipping charges, I decided to try to find the same thing online for less.

During my internet search I came across some disturbing information. It seems that the "Bender Ball" company was running what can only be called a scam. Unbeknownst to the consumer, along with your "complete" kit, you are also purchasing a DVD subscription at 19.99 a month plus 3.99 shipping. Which, from what I've read, shows up on your statement as almost 50 dollars. This act in and of itself is not necessarily a scam, but the manner in which it is presented definitely is. This subscription is never mentioned until you reach the checkout page. Most people I know aren't in the habit of checking the product description throughout every stage of the checkout process. You read the description BEFORE you put it in your shopping cart. To change the product description from one page to the next is dishonest and, in fact, a scam.

Turns out 9.99 really is too good to be true. If you have already ordered the bender ball, check your order confirmation then call 1-800-601-7088 to be removed from the continuity program. You supposedly have 30 days after your purchase to do so without being charged.

I was still very interested in the product, but was weary of the company's practices and didn't want to contribute even one cent to a fraudulent company. I wanted another option, so I purchased a 10" child's play ball for a dollar and it works just as well as the original ball that I almost purchased for over 20 dollars. If you're looking for a ball with a little more give, you could also purchase a small exercise ball. They are very easy to find and only about 7 or 8 bucks. Bottom line, don't let this company get away with their tricks. As consumers we have to take a stand against these types of scams.

*Recently the company has changed the product description, which now reads "includes the convenience of the Bender Preview Program." The details of this preview program are found by clicking a link on the product page. This is a step in the right direction, but I feel it came too late. My confidence in the company is forever shattered, and updated product descriptions can't fix that.
