Are Our Schools Failing Our Students Part 2

As a continuation to the first article published about the schools failing our students, I would like to add to the fact of students being 'passed' through the system. I was involved in a recent conversation about this topic, which mainly emphasized why the students are being 'passed' through the system; Majority of the cases are stemming from teachers/administrators not wanting to deal with delinquent students.

There have been so many instances where the student is one who does not abide by the school's rules, gives the entire faculty problems and hard times, and is never a participant in his or her classes. But the answer is not to pass them on to the next teacher for it to be their problem, but to keep that child back and focus on the areas in which the children may need help in. Generally, that child is calling out for some form of attention, and thus making them act out. Not only that, these children aren't receiving enough guidance and attention at home, and when they arrive at school, having no guidance or enthusiasm about the true reason they are at the school, they tend to lack in certain areas of academic progress.

We see so many students being 'passed' through the system for being a 'troubled' student, and sooner or later, this student will have learned nothing. Simply because no one took the necessary actions to ensure that this 'troubled' student receives more attention than the other students, so that he/she can get that 'one-on-one' experience to make their learning experience a positive one. How often do we see these 'troubled' students acting out in school, then returning to a home where they are playing the role of the parent.

I say this because not only are the educational systems failing the students, put the role the parents have to play in their educational experience is decreasing as well! You'd be amazed at some of the lifestyles these children have to live; how they have no guidance from their parents, don't live with their parents, or even know their parents, for that matter. I've witnessed first hand, how some children return home, excited about their day at school, to find out that their parents could care less about what they learned, how they are doing, nor what participation is needed by the parent.

Needless to say that this leads to the child not being motivated about his educational experience, thus the alleged 'troubled' student. More action must be taken to ensure that these children receive the best education possible! It will soon bite us in the rear, when 20 years from now, our nation will be in the hands of delinquent, uneducated leaders, and who wants that? I surely don't!!
