Are You Protecting Your Home Against Possible Losses?

Evan Nash
Insurance companies must be able to quantify the possible losses that their insured individuals could suffer and make them into an actual mathematical equation. This is the only way in which insurance companies can try to be profitable against the plethora of issues that insured people will run in to. In doing this insurance companies have defined terms that help to educate people about the common types of losses and placed them in corresponding categories.

In the insurance world the actual means by which property is damaged or destroyed is referred to as a "cause of loss". The causes of loss (or perils) that you may incur and have covered by your insurance company will be listed in your policy. Certain causes of loss are covered while others are not, depending on the individual's ability to be able to avoid such a loss from happening. There are several difference causes of loss you may be susceptible to in your home. Here are the most popular few and how you can guard against them:

  1. Fire is far and away the most devastating and common type of disaster that can hit your home. To protect against fire destroying your home you should check your smoke detectors regularly and keep fire extinguishers on hand in your home. Make sure that everyone is aware of common fire starting accidents like leaving a stove on or faulty wiring. The more you can protect your home against this cause of loss the more you will save on insurance costs.
  2. Acts of god are other causes of loss that are usually separated out on your policy but are all difficult to guard against. Flood, hail, wind and storm damage are difficult to guard against other than having a capable roof on your home and a place to go for shelter. These are not easy to reduce your risk on, but you can definitely guard against having further bodily harm as a result.
  3. Theft or vandalism of your home is another cause of loss that is very common and can become very expensive. There are a few ways to guard against this cause of loss from having a home security alarm installed to having good lighting around your home's exterior to having a neighborhood watch program. All of these things will help bring down the total of your homeowners insurance premium. Keeping your neighbors informed will also protect your home, but may not give you a break on your insurance.
