Are you trying to fulfill your dreams through your child? Do you think your family and friends view you as a pushy parent? All parents want their children to succeed but there is a point when you have to allow your child to do what he or she can reasonably do and achieve success at his or her pace.
Many parents who tend to be pushy may in fact be trying to fulfill dreams they were unable to accomplish by expecting their children to achieve in these areas. Even if the child is pursuing a sport or creative talent that you may be nurturing, it is important that you don't overstep your boundaries and become an overbearing pushy parent.
If you have ever been to a cheerleading competition, school football game or soccer game, it is fairly obvious who the pushy parents are. Not only are they hollering at the kids to do this or do that they are also coaching on the sidelines. The problem with pushy parents is that not only are they a turn off to other parents but also to the coaches, sponsors and other kids. So imagine how the kids themselves feel about their parents.
Rather than trying to take a stronghold on your child's personal life, extracurricular activities and academic life, step back and look at the overall picture and the role you are actually playing. Where all parents want their children to succeed, being too pushy can actually push your child away from the activity or area in which you want them to achieve and succeed.
Step back and make the attempt to turn your pushy parental ways into behaviors that encourage and motivate your child to do his or her best. Don't belittle the child when your expectations are not met. A child is a child only once in a lifetime. Don't take the sweet years away from your child and make it into a competition to satisfy self. With the right balance you can motivate and encourage a child that takes the best from all of his or her experiences and uses them to develop confidence, self-esteem and a skill or talent that might eventually lead to a career.
