Everyone knows about April Fool's day, but do you know any of the other interesting and odd holidays there are in April? If you have never heard of No Housework Day or National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day then read on. You may find several reasons to celebrate in April.

The month of April is important for a lot of reasons. It is Keep America Beautiful Month, National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Holocaust Remembrance Month, and Autism Awareness Month. But did you know that April also is important for a lot of other reasons, some of them rather unusual. April is National Frog Month and National Poetry Month, and on a larger scale April is International Guitar Month and International Customer Loyalty Month. Looking for something to get your mouth watering? April is also known as National Soft Pretzel Month, Fresh Florida Tomato Month, National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month, and National Fresh Celery Month. If some of these unusual holidays make you laugh, you should also know that April is National humor month as well.

If celebrating the whole month is too much for you there are weekly events that you can enjoy as well. Be Kind to Spiders Week, Astronomy Week, and Medication Safety Week all take place during the first week of April. The second week brings even more fun with National Bra Fit Week, National Gardening Week, and Reading is Fun Week. If you are not burned out from the festivities of the first half of the month there is much more. Organize Your Files Week, Explore Your Career Week, and National Secretary Week are celebrating during the third week of April. And during the last week of April we can enjoy National TV-Turnoff Week, National Volunteer Week, and National Playground Safety Week. There is enough going on to keep the streamers and decorations up all month long.

If you are looking for some special days to enjoy April is certainly not short on those either. A mixture of silly and serious holidays can be found all month long. April 1st is more than just April Fool's Day; it is also American Firefighter's Day, Meat Loaf Appreciation day, and Check Your Batteries Day. April 2nd is National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day as well as National Ferret Day. April 5th is Bell Bottoms Day if you are looking for a reason to pull out some of your old clothes. April 7th is No Housework Day, which you can celebrate along side Public Television Day. On the 10th you can enjoy Encourage a Young Writer Day as well as National Sibling Day. April 11th is certainly a mixed bag featuring both Jackie Robinson Day and Barbershop Quartet Day. On April 13th you can test your creative skills with Blame Someone Else Day, and if it gets you into trouble feel free to blame me. Food lovers will be pleased to know that April 16th is National Eggs Benedict Day, April 17th is National Cheeseball Day, April 18th is National Animal Crackers Day, and April 22nd is National Jelly Bean Day. The origin of April Fool's Day is uncertain, but the current thinking is that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the Gregorian Calendar under Charles IX. New Year's celebrations were moved from March 25 - April 1 to January 1.
