Are You Ready for Early Retirement

Kendra Dahlstrom
With so many baby boomers in the workforce, early retirement is becoming an important issue. So many people want to retire before their social security kicks in, or before their pensions are maximized. This is understandable. They work their entire lives for the freedom of retirement. There is no one to tell them what to do or when to do it. However, early retirement is not just about freedom, there are a couple other issues to consider. Before choosing an early retirement, make sure you are financially and emotionally ready for the change.

Early Retirement Finances: Consult a Professional
Although retirement packages and early retirement packages may look appealing, it is wise to always consult a financial advisor before taking the leap. Remember that most retired folks live on a fixed income. A healthy amount of money today could look pitiful in 25 years. Your financial advisor will be able to do a projected cost analysis of your life expenses. Remember, although some expenses disappear during early retirement, some, like health insurance are added.

Get Involved In the Community Before Early Retirement
Early retirement may sound fun, but once you have been out of work for a month or so, you may get bored. Loneliness is another issue early retirement folks face. If you are used to seeing the same people every day for a significant amount of time, you will begin to miss those faces. Get involved in your community to maintain sanctity and a social lifestyle.

Properly Prepare Your Savings For Early Retirement
There are too many people who simply do not save enough money when it comes to early retirement. Don't let this happen to you. If you save like you will be retiring a couple of years earlier than you actually will be, your retirement money will look fantastic after the extra years have passed. Also, if your income will be lower after retirement, begin living on that amount about 3 months before your last day. This will get you used to cutting back, and will give you a real picture of how you will be living if you decide to take the early retirement package.

By no means should you slave your life away working if you can easily take an early retirement package. However, you should always be mentally, emotionally, and financially prepared before you take the leap. Planning for early retirement is more than simply cleaning out your desk.
