Are Reality Shows Worth Watching?

For the past few years reality shows have become a huge part of the American culture. The popularity of reality shows have made many reality stars instant celebrities and millionaires. Many stories and images of reality stars can easily be seen all over magazines and the news. This increase in the popularity of reality shows may have people feeling a little skeptical about these shows being worth the watch. Other people also believe these reality shows are spiraling out of control and want something done about it.

Believe it or not there was once a time when reality shows weren't a normal part of the American pop culture. Since the introduction of reality shows to mainstream TV they have quickly taken the place of many scripted shows. Even though reality shows are supposedly unscripted many of them are beginning to look like scripts are used to setup some scenes or the entire show. This has caused many viewers of some reality shows to feel deceived. One reason viewers believe some of these shows are deceitful and scripted is when the fights between characters come off as fake. This leads viewers to quickly believe the whole purpose of the drama and fights is to increase ratings. Many people feel like the shows are a big waste of time and a major turn off.

Another reason reality shows have become even more unappealing is the introduction of the celebrity reality shows. In the world of celebrities, people will use the benefit of have a reality show to promote a new project, promote themselves, or use it as another source of income. Many of these celeb reality shows are full of drama and from the beginning to the end seem to be completely scripted. Over the past few years there has been an increase in the number of celebs that have their own reality shows.

Some of the people that have benefited the most from reality shows are the average Joe's that have become instant celebrities through these shows. Not only have they been turned into celebrities but many of them have become millionaires. One the highest paid reality star is Kate Gosselin of Kate Plus 8. She reportedly receives $250,000 per episode and five figures from speaking engagement. Some of the other ways reality stars have benefited financially is by creating their own products, endorsing other people's products, and by appearing on other reality shows such as Dancing with the Stars.

Even though many of the stars on these reality shows are receiving fame and financial opportunities, these shows could lose viewers if they continue to create pointless and fake drama to get viewers to watch. An example of a show that was negatively affected by it's over the top drama is The Real Housewives of D.C. There are reports that the shows ratings were lower than the Bravo network expected them to be.

Despite all of the terrible reality shows that are currently on TV, there are a few that are worth watching. Some of the reality shows that are game based or the shows that have no intentions of deceiving viewers will probably be worth the watch for many people. But the best ways for many viewers to deal with these pointless reality shows are to avoid them and start supporting the scripted shows that are currently on TV.
