Believe it or not when you throw out your trash without shredding it you immediately become a potential target for identity theft. There are experts out there who make a living preying on innocent victims. In order to fulfill the obligation of their occupation they will go through your trash and try to retrieve your personal information. Once someone has your information they can apply for loans in your name and ruin your credit report. Always make sure your information is shredded before you discard.
Once you get your credit card statements you should verify that all of the balances are correct and that you have no unauthorized charges. If there are charges of this sort it could mean that someone has gained access to your personal information. This becomes such a hassle to clear up once you have been comprised.
When we are in a hurry there is a inclination to leave our purse or wallet in our car. It only takes a thief a few minutes to break in and take your personal belongings or they can just steal the entire car. You are dealing with people who have done this before so don't think you can waltz into some establishment and come out with your car still in tact.
If you have ever been required to give out your personal information in a public place it's a good idea to be careful. You never know who is listening. Someone could be writing down your social security number while you are unaware. Be very discrete. Another thing you want to be careful of is not giving out your information until you understand completely why the information is needed. Never blindly give out your information just because someone asks for it.
During these tough economic times people have a tendency to be very bold. Don't be surprised if someone walks right up to your mail box and steals your mail. You need to have a secured locked mail box or you may want to consider investing in a P.O. Box at the post office. These are really inexpensive.
I bet you can sit down and by brainstorming come up with five or six other ways that could put you at risk for identity theft. Make your list right now. Once you do make sure you have mechanisms in place that keep you from becoming an identity theft victim
